Hey ladies and gents, I've been slaving away re-reading all the stickies pretending I'm a newbie again and knowing what I know now alot of the terms we use can be confusing. Since we think in language I believe we should have a legend or a glossary of common terms to help some of you just coming in who are new to all of this and for some of you to have a reference on. This is to be put in the front of every issue of the E-Zine so that we can start reaching an audience outside the forums, so the descriptions need to be clear and precise and we only have a limited amount of days left. I've done most of the footwork, but let me get your opinion on the wording to make it as user friendly as possible. Newcomers, this is where you come in. Hopefully together we can create something that can be used by all. Now remember we want this list small, compact (no more than 2 pages), easy to read and easy to understand. I know I can do some better explainations, I know there is some typos, I know I forgot some entries, I know some things need to be removed, group project, let's correct this to help the community grow and to help eachother. Post the change needed below and I will update as appropriate responses come in. Thanks guys.
Cheers,
Kensai
3DS Max – 3ds Max is a very powerful and very expensive 3D imaging software program that is used mainly for special effects in movies and modeling objects and characters in video games.
Body Filler – See Bondo.
Bondo – A name brand of body filler (although the name is used in the same sense that Band Aids refer to any kind of bandage) salmon in color. A two-part putty when mixed with the hardening agent it becomes rock hard and was developed for cosmetic repair to dents in cars. Used as a hardening agent in armor making and makes a great surface for detailing.
Cardstock – Paper used for a range of paper weights that are in demand for making business cards and greeting cards, and for a variety of paper crafts. The main features that distinguish a sheet of cardstock are weight, fiber, color, finish and surface texture, and size. Of these, weight is the feature that actually defines cardstock.
Cast – The final result of a casting.
Casting – Casting is a manufacturing process by which a liquid material is (usually) poured into a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowed to solidify. The solid casting is then ejected or broken out to complete the process.
Catalyst – A substance that enables a chemical reaction.
Clay – When referred to in armor making this is an oil-based clay. Usually this is Chavant FPS soft, medium or hard.
Corrugated PVC – Usually black in color this thin rippled plastic pipe is cut into half to form the vents on a MJOLNIR helmet.
Dremel – A brand name rotary tool that has many attachments for cutting, sanding and fine detailing. Commonly used to describe any rotary tool of any brand in the same likeness as Bondo.
Dusting Mask – Also known as a painters mask, looking very similar to a surgical mask. The weaved material has an elastic band and sometimes a metal clip to form to the nose for a better seal. When used properly they protect from dust and other particles when sanding.
Epoxy – Polyepoxide is a thermosetting epoxide polymer that cures when mixed with a catalyst or hardener. Epoxies are commonly used as a glue or for strengthening like resin.
Expanding Foam – Also goes by the name brand, Great Stuff, a polyurethane based insulating foam sealant. When the foam is exposed to air, as it name implies, it expands forming a dense but rigid material.
Fiberglass – A material made from extremely fine fibers of glass. It is used in conjunction with resin to become a firm and rigid material, making it perfect for reinforcement.
Fiberglass Cloth – Fiberglass that comes woven together in a big sheet, has a similar texture and appearance to tarp. Is smooth to the touch and thinner than fiberglass mat.
Fiberglass Mat – Fiberglass that comes in a thick and broken up state. Because more resin is required, it becomes harder than fiberglass cloth but sharp and jagged.
Great Stuff – See expanding foam.
Hardener – An organic peroxide, or catalyst that causes a chemical reaction to cure or harden when mixed with a polyester resin such as resin or Bondo.
Hot Glue – Hot melt adhesive or commonly referred to as hot glue is a form of thermoplastic adhesive. When hot glue sticks are fed through a hot glue gun the continuous-duty heating element melts the plastic glue which is pushed through the nozzle. The glue is tacky when hot, but hardens and stops being sticky in a few seconds. Commonly used as a cheaper and safer alternative to hardening with resin, fiberglass and body filler.
Jacket – This is a hard supporting material for the flexible rubber mold. It keeps the mold in the right place to avoid imperfections when casting.
LED – Light-emitting diode is a semiconductor diode that emits a bright light when an electrical current is applied. It uses little energy, produces no heat and is quite bright.
Maya – Maya is a very powerful and very expensive 3D imaging software program that is used mainly for special effects in movies and modeling objects and characters in video games.
MJOLNIR – Originates from Norse mythology as the name for Thor's hammer which was said to be indestructible. Our use of the word refers to MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor which is a heavy and complex suit of ground infantry armor of the UNSC designed to be worn by a Spartan-II. This is the armor type Master Chief wears.
Mold – This is the flexible rubber layer that you are brush on to the model you wish to mold. It creates a rubbery skin encompassing all the detail of the model.
Mountain Fold – A mountain fold is a folding of the material (usually paper or cardstock) into a ^ shape, which resembles a mountain.
Mud – See Rondo.
NIOSH – As part of the CDC (Center for Disease Control), NIOSH is responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries. They regulate safety gear such as respirators, goggles and dust masks.
ODST – The Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (also known as Helljumpers) are a UNSC Marine Corps Special Forces unit in the Halo Universe. ODST's are known for their unorthodox methods of insertion, including orbital drops onto terrestrial environments.
Painter's Mask – See Dusting Mask.
Parting Seam – A seam manufactured into a mold to allow easy release of the cast.
Pepakura – A program used to take a 3d model and flatten it into small puzzle pieces that can be printed out on paper or cardstock. When the pieces are reassembled it forms a 3d paper version of the model.
Resin – Used to refer to polyester resin (or fiberglass resin) mixed with a catalyst to cause a heat based chemical reaction. When it hardens (which has several variables including, the amount of catalyst used, temperature, and humidity) it creates a tough but brittle surface. It can be applied separately or with fiberglass. When applied with fiberglass and becomes fully dry it will be a hard and rigid material which is commonly used to build the shells of cars, boats and in our case armor/weapons.
Respirator – A safety device used to protect the wearer from inhaling harmful dusts, fumes, vapors and/or gases. When used in armor making terms it always refers to a mask approved by NIOSH for handling organic vapors.
Rondo – A 50/50 mixture of polyurethane resin and body filler (Bondo). You then add double the amount of the catalyst for the polyurethane resin. The result is a muddy white mixture that when poured results in an extremely hard and smooth surface. For maximum efficiency walls of painter tape are constructed to form an empty pool for it to settle and to let gravity even it out.
Sanding – Operation carried out by means of sandpaper or other abrasives to smooth out imperfections by taking off layers of the model until it is smooth and flawless.
Scratch Building – Scratch building is the process of building a scale model from raw material, rather than building it from a commercial kit or buying it pre-assembled.
Score – A method of weakening paper or other thin sheets of materials prior to cutting, tearing or bending, by scratching a line along the area where the separation is to occur, usually an X-Acto knife or pressing down hard with a pen.
Silicone – Silicones are largely inert compounds with a wide variety of forms and uses. Typically heat-resistant, nonstick, and rubberlike.
Slush Casting – Also know as roto-casting (or rotational casting) is a casting method in which the casting material is poured inside the mold and is rotated so that the casting material gets into the depths and details of the mold and hardens on the outside of the mold leaving the inside hollow. A common technique to cast helmets in our craft.
Spot Putty – A putty for filling minor imperfections and scratches and is sandable.
Sticky – An important thread that has been permanently moved to the top of the page for easy reference.
Super Glue – A cyanoacrylate bonding agent, used to glue things permanently in place.
UNSC – The United Nations Space Command, better known as the UNSC, is the current main government of humanity, spanning multiple colony worlds along with Earth in the Halo Universe.
Visor – This refers to the protective eyepiece for a helmet usually composed of HJC motorcycle visors with a reflective surface.
Valley Fold – A valley fold is a folding of the material (usually paper or cardstock) into a V shape which resembles a valley.
WIP – Work in progress, usually a thread accompanied by pictures to represent a project currently under construction.
