I do Mixed Martial Arts. Been doing it for about a year now.
The training encompasses aspects of Western Boxing, Muay Thai, and Brasilian Jiu Jitsu.
Our classes are divided by gender and Striking/Grappling. To avoid social/size pairing conundrums, I don't attend the Men's Grappling...but I do go to their striking classes to get more experience with the fighters there.
Striking is definitely my favorite but I like BJJ a good deal too. BJJ is very mental/endurance related but I like it because of its versatility when facing a much larger opponent. Big or small, sleepy time can be the great equalizer (which is especially great for women). We like to joke about learning Jiu Jitsu by saying, "It's like choking a bicycle."
Nice, I didn't know all you guys did this stuff. Dhruv, when I got into the adult classes I think it would be cool if you joined. I'm as big as the instructors at my dojo :rolleyes Unfortunately the only teacher who knows any kadas was pregnant(she and the owner are married) and know we have to learn our kadas in 30 minutes and teach them to each other. I wish the instructors were more violent, we never do any strikes in sparing(they use me as a target for the little kids and make me go easy on them when wrestling ), and I haven't wrestled one of them in months. I'm currently making my own pair of nun chucks. If anyone could upload stylized dragon or tiger pictures or asian characters; I need some for an inscription and ornamentation.
Garth, Not all martial arts are about being violent. Its mostly being respectful and knowing some bits for self defense. Not all karate is like the karate kid. Respect and Discipline of yourself and others is what my dads old sensei said.
Sorry, you misunderstand me. I just find the fighting really fun, and need the exercise. The selfdefense is fun. I do respect my instructors(I hope I do enough), and would listen to them and believe their advice almost no matter what on. But really why do we do this? Because it's cool and a fun thing to do.

Sparring is fun yes. I did understand you perfectally. you could always find someone to spar with outside the classes, a fellow student perhaps?
I was into karate when I was younger, never took any classes. I just learned what my dad tought me, just the basics and what to do in a jam (including using the enviroment to your advantage).
Nope, none big enough in the class, and none aggressive enough outside. I think I do want to go too hard on people though. Keep in mind that I never hurt the little kids(wrestling with them is fun though as I use exagerated moves and bear-like strength to try and get them to use technique instead of falling beneath an obviously stronger opponent, making large errors and trying to train then to see such ect.). I am definably too big for the kid's class, but I want to move with my brother who's been here as long as I have(he is small). Often though, I am used a a demonstrator(the person who gets beat up by the teacher) and given a small group of kids to work with to help. I wish I could try as hard but temporarily decrease my strength.

I was doing some Yoseikan Budo for over then 10 years, I had to drop it because I had no more time to practice. I want to start doing some Kung Fu one day.
Ive wanted to practice Escrima for a few years now. I saw it on Stargate Atlantis, Tayla looked so hot..........ANYWHO Escrima looks like alot of fun but broken hands and massive bruises doesnt really. Yet as they say, "you have to break some eggs to make an omlette".
Did Wing Chun with my brothers for one summer. Learned enough to defend myself it nesssarcy. I can see how Bruce Lee got his "One Inch Punch" from Wing Chun. However, with Wing Chun, you can do the same amount of damage as the One Inch Punch while your hand is on the person, let alone one inch. Learned that the hard way from the instructor. I swore my heart stopped for a second when he did it.
And Garth, take the kiddie class as an oppurtunity to learn to control your power. When I sparred the kids (unless they were little as in 5 year olds) I didn't go very easy on them and exaggerate. I just learned to control my power and I would stop right before I hit them so I wouldn't hurt them. Now little 4 and 5 years olds, I was only my knees and punching really slow, etc, etc. Also making your own nunchucks might not end well. of course, my firend and I have snapped just about every pair of nunchucks we've ever touched. Though that can be funny, sometimes, like at my friends BB test. When he borrowed nice pair from sensei, because he brok his. (The ones with the ball bearing and the chain. *Swing, Swing, Swing* oooh, shiny.) It could end badly. I have a practice pair that are padded, but until I can learn the whole Kata, I'm not getting real ones.
I do knife throwing lol I forgot to mention that. Its a form of martial arts, Concentration, knife discipline and other aspects. I do one spin, half spin, quarter spin (also known as no spin). Iam wanting to learn how to throw shurikens (small steel rod with pointed end). Fun sport/martial art. Ive been experimenting with a russian style that involes no spin what so ever, Yuri feden started this style a while back. Heres a link to how its done. He has multiple youtube vids as well.
Heres my knives. The first 4 on the left are plain 6 inch throwing knives, they dont weigh much but they work. The middle is one I made from an old "medival" dagger that broke (this thing can be thrown half spin from roughly 30-40 feet!!). The last 2 on the right are simple throwers, the weight is low but they stick about 2-3 inches in a log.
I have been taking martial arts for about 8 1/2 years. I have my first degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo, a yellow belt in Krav Maga, yellow belt in kendo, and yellow belt in Agedo. I love sparring >:O I'm undefeated
