My Spartan Laser Build
I actually completed this project a while ago, and I thought the people on this forum would like to see the finished project. I can answer any questions and give what advice I can based on my limited experience.

Materials Used:
Sheet Polystyrene
Auto Body Filler
Upholstery Foam
Various electronics from Radio Shack

Pictures:

I started taking pictures after I had already made significant progress

Compare to IGN's image of the same weapon

Extreme! Very nice, the only thing that it needs is more weathering. It looks very clean, especially when compared to the in-game model. But spectacular work!

Incredible work. It looks specatular. I would love to see a video of the moving parts; are they controlled manually or by servos or something? And maybe some detail photos of the LED business end. :)

That came out great. How much does it weigh?
Approximately 7 pounds.
The weight is actually fairly comfortable. It feels heavy enough to be believable, but not so heavy that it hurts to carry around.

The mechanism is manually operated. The loop on the front end is pulled forward to raise the cover and push the barrel forward at the same time. The fifth image in my first post is a CAD drawing of the mechanism, and the sixth is the built version. It operates on the same principle as a scissor lift.

I'll get a detail picture of the LED's shortly.

Great looking laser. Don't ever step out of your car with that if stop by a cop. I can see it now, you open the back of your car, and the cop say Sir! back away from the car, and get down on the ground. " I know, I'm a retired cop". That thing looks so real. Great job.

Are you kidding me?? That's amazing dude! If you weathered it a tad, you could be a real battle-hardened Spartan. I noticed the LEDs for the laser: Do they glow brighter as you hold the trigger? If so, I don't even know what I would say...

I plan to give it a more weathered look in the near future. As for special effects, well . . .

My original intention was to splurge for an advanced programmable light and sound system, which could be set up to mimic the charging and firing sequence of the in game weapon. (This system is also employed by people who build their own lightsabers, which when hooked up to a motion sensor, give motion appropriate "whooshing" noises.)

The problem was my other plans for installing powerful magnets in my suit, and a metal plate in the laser, which would allow me to actually attach the laser to my back like in the games. Because the programing is stored on a microchip, the moving magnetic fields would wipe the data every time.

For the moment, its a simple on/off switch.:p

I might still go back and add a better system in the future, ask me again when I get out of college and have a steady job.
