Hey @
RoxyRoo, just a heads up that I'll be moving this thread to its new home in the Non-Halo Costumes and Props forum.
Yeah, I noticed that. >_> All these changes are going to take a bit to get used to.
--------------------------
Time is running out. I have only a week before SabotenCon, and two weeks before the Release. I finally have a day off so I'm working on the costume again. These are the knee pads. I'll add an armor knee guard later, but at least I have the base now. These are made from white spandex and yellow/white faux leather I used from an old hand bag I've been saving the materials for.
1) I started with pattern making. I used newspaper and tape and covered my knee with it. I copied the patterns (roughly) onto the fabric and then cut it out and sewed them together. Why patterns? So I don't waste fabric. Spandex/Lycra is expensive. Probably one of the more expensive fabrics out there. I decided Spandex was the best for the Knee simply for comfort and movement purposes.
2) I cut out the "knee guard" portion of the pattern and did the same method onto the vinyl (faux leather). Vinyl is difficult to work with because it doesn't fold as easy as normal fabric, plus it also has a lot of friction against the plastic of the sewing machine. You have to grab and pull it through as you sew, WHILE folding it to get the curves right. I cut a triangle shape at the bottom to create the roundness that is the knee. If I hadn't, it'd bunch up and look stupid. lol
3) Then came attaching the knee guards to the spandex. I sewed two paralel, 1-cm long lines around the points I wished to put those decorative rivets. After that was done, I pushed the rivets through. I did a test fit and it worked okay, but I saw that the vinyl still flared out. I fixed that by doing some deft sewing, following marks I drew with a pencil to make sure the edges matched up right where I needed them to be set.
4) aaaaaand THERE! Now the vinyl and spandex look awesome.
HERE IS BOTH! 8D
ONWARD TO MORE SHTUFF!!!!
