Hello Ladies and Lads of costume greatness!
I would like to share with you my Spartan III armor that I have finally started to get underway. With the summer season fast approaching, it's a lot easier to work on projects outside as the weather clears up.
A majority of this suit will be made of foam with the helmet as the exception.
This is the suit I am aiming for (except the helmet will be the Recon helmet)
And here is what I have so far.
I've had this Recon helmet for a while but I haven't been able to work on it for a long time due to weather.
It's a pep file that was rondo'd on the inside and i am slowly but surely getting the sanding done. The weather is still on and off here and the best times I can work on it is the weekends so I don't expect this to be done any time soon.
I also hope to get this helmet molded and have casts available for sale when I get this bucket all shiny and clean.
And here is what I've been working on this weekend.
A week ago, I had put together the first gauntlet while on a family trip to the beach. This Friday, I gave it a coat of latex house paint and then decided to add extra detail with craft foam. Yesterday, I painted it and put together a second gauntlet. I decided the second gauntlet needed some major battle damage and added some melted scratches across the top of the gauntlet.
So both gauntlets were finished in two days. Not so bad, if I do say so myself.
As a couple of side-projects, I am also working on a Halo 4 magnum and Halo 4 Battle Rifle. Both of these projects are donated by my friend who didn't want to work on these anymore. The Battle Rifle is a prop that didn't turn out during a cast pull and the Magnum was 3D printed but he didn't like the way it turned out so he gave it to me.
I only have a picture of the magnum right now and none of the BR because I haven't had the time to work on it at all.
So that's what I have so far!
And as a special little thing I'd like to add to my posts, I'd like to start posting little tips that I've learned with this project as I go. I hope other fabricators will find these tips helpful no matter what your experience level is. I've been doing this for the past four years and I'm still learning.
All right, kiddies, that's all I got for the day.
I hope to get more progress on this suit as long as the weather keeps up.
Please feel free to leave any feedback or critique you may have. I love hearing from you guys and learning new things every day.
Cheers,
Alexis

So here is your costuming tip for the day! If you are working on foam pieces outside, DO NOT leave your pieces out in the direct sun. Even if it is not warm out, the sun is still warm and it can cause your foam pieces to come apart if you're keeping them together with Hot Glue. Leaving your completed pieces out in the sun can also damage your paint job. I left my first gauntlet out in the sun while working on the second one and I found small bubbles all over the gauntlet where the sun's rays were hitting it. It wasn't so bad that other people would notice, but you can definitely feel the change in texture on the piece. |
