I programmed my custom virus protection... I hate norton since it slows my computer down like hell and i think it's installing viruses on your computer on purpose so that you would keep re-buying the subscription.

Besides i dont really need a protection system since i can easily delete one if i come across one..
(if you can program the virus, you can delete the virus ;) )

Apparently, you're the only one here who uses Norton. So no, I don't think we can help you.

(We've been trying to help, by telling you to get a different anti-virus, but I guess not...) :whistle:

seriously listen to nicktendo and everybody else. norton is like kmart clothes at abercrombie prices. use avast antivirus, its free and instantly lets me know if i have a virus or a website is trying to put one on my computer.

No offense, and please don't take this the wrong way, but:

For someone who is clearly not listening to anyone on the forum with their (quite possibly) expert opinions and who uses Norton as a virus checker - I really don't think you need to play around in the registry. You can (AND WILL) screw up your computer.

Like everyone else has been saying, find something other than Norton as a virus checker, and don't even bother looking int the registry. I assume you want to play in there to make your computer faster? If so, Norton is probably the problem.

As for me, I've had machines running Vista, 2003, XP and 2000 all without virus protection for about 8 years now and the ONE virus I got I was easily able to get rid of it.

The main points to remember:
- Don't ever download an EXE from a pr0n site
- Be VERY wary of keygens
- Don't install free screensavers or other crappy software.

And if you want to do a check on your system, I cannot recommend HijackThis enough. It's a great piece of software that scans your PC and gives you an output file that tells you everything that's running. Then, simply stick the log file in an online parser (here) and it'll spit out a report on all the things, their danger level, what they are and what they have been rated by the community

Couldnt have said it better myself :)
If you dont do this stuff you will NEVER get a virus on your computer.. (unless someone deliberately wants to manually hack your computer.. but that's usually only done in movies..)

If you are cautios and dont do anything stupid, or download anything stupid you shouldnt have a problem.
Because you cannot get a virus onto your computer without downloading something.

Easily can!
Are you even heard about RPC (remote procedure call) in Windows?
Try to install WinXP without any servicepacks, and you'll get infected immediately!

I never said installing without service packs... i was talking about this case particularry... if you have a normal computer with the OS it came with etc.. (exclude virus protection) The chances that you get a virus are 0.00001%

Unless someone actually, manually breaches your firewall and installs a virus..

And RPC can only be used if you have access to the other guys computer physically 1st... or get a trojan on their ccomputer.

And anyway, anyone that doesn't keep up with security updates for their programs is again - an idiot.

If you use norton and get a virus, the best way to delete it is to just redo windows XP/vista.

I've fixed people's PC's where Viruses download more viruses one after another. I installed AVG and erased them, but more just came no matter how many scans I did. The best was to just erase and reinstall windows than to sit there for hours deleting a virus that pops back up.

Yeah I've seen registry residents and they are *very* annoying and time consuming to get rid of. Sometimes its worth going into Reg Edit to clear them out, but if someone has given several viruses free reign of their processes, it's easier to just reinstall and start fresh. It's a shame but it's much easier than tracking down each key, that's for sure!

I'm also a fan of AVG free. The price is right and the protection is superior to almost all subscription based services. Hijack This, Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware are also worth their weight in gold.

AVG all the way. I used to run Norton and eventually it was choking my computer to death. I've run into others with the same problem.. Ad-Aware too is a lifesaver.

I think all of us past Norton users can agree.

Also, if you don't know how to get into the registry, then maybe you shouldn't be in it. For the sake of your computer.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend anyone touching their registry unless they are really familiar with doing so. Registries are nebulous and shouldn't be prodded at random :D. If you tamper with legitimate keys while trying to remove a virus, you end up doing even more damage...bummer :p.

trojan is 1 of 3 major virus i got today it basicly slows everything up really its just a major pain but is serious

w32.alcra.B is one of the most deadly computer virus ever made it is a code 3 in nortons file and is the grand daddy of all worms this one will have your comp dead in 24 hours so if you get this be afraid be very afraid and get all scans every thing youve got on that thing!

adware is a medium level virus and can just slow everything up but this one can also copy your files and start sharing everything over the internet so its bad for a buisness computer
the best thing i can sujest is norton 360 total control its extremly fast for catching these and is my personal recommendation for all computers

hope this helps as i almost fell victim to these s.o.bs but norton killed them

~~~kore~~~ (y) (y)
yeah i got 2 trojan viruses, but i dont know how i got it cause i only go on 405th and youtube
Actually using the "return to date" function is good... if you get a virus you can just return your computer (deleting all software files and programs installed in the past days..)
One of my Maya PCs got nuked with virus during a SP update.
I never had them online, they were mainly for modeling and rendering. One day I decided to download all 4 service packs and right towards the end of the install, It was attacked by several pop ups simultaneously, the control panel was locked out, my desktop background replaced with a giant warning stating that my PC was infected.
I couldn't reformat, I was working on a few animation projects for school. I spent about 8 hours cleaning it up using about 7 different cleaning software.
I didn't even have a browser open at the time it happened. It was during the update installation.
I hate why people make this kind of crap to hurt other people's machines.
Those people are a waste of pregnancy :D
BTW, abercrombie IS just that! Overpriced kmart clothing.
I don't understand why people buy there when there's nothing special other than high prices and the name printed on everything. Not to mention the naked male manikins all around the store. Gross.
But what do little rich kids know other than image?!? :D
I, personally, like McAfee. Even though I haven't gotten a virus for around 2 years, it has caught spyware from Gamespy, etc. (I use it for Halo PC :p ), and very efficiently, as well.
I HIGHLY recommend getting McAfee. Very, very worth it. It automatically updates every few hours or every day on my computer.
Also, watch out for keyloggers. They can record anything you type, and get you even more viruses.
Also, if you're paying for Norton, DON'T BE AN IDIOT. Norton sucks horribly, and I cannot emphasize that enough. As someone said earlier (and as I've heard in many other anti-virus discussions), Norton may actually be installing these viruses, or leading the way for "paying" hackers.
Get AVG 2008, McAfee, or something that isn't Norton. You WILL thank us all.
