Howdy all, been a member here for a while and started on an iron man helmet maybe 2 years ago and still have not gotten around to finishing it due to unemployment, kids, wife and everything else everyone else deals with.

So, I got back online here a week or so ago and found the new foam armor and all. I've been itching to do a whole IM suit but for myself but the diet hasn't gone as planned either. Well the foam armor got me really excited as well as my son (He's 4) so I thought I would give it a go with him. I know at that small it may be quite a challenge but it should be fun.

Has Anyone done this for someone that small and what kind of challenges will I be looking at?

I'm thinking for that small using a 1/4" foam. Will that be enough and do you think I will get ok detail from it?

More questions will come up but I just wanted to get this started.

I'll be using robo3867 pep files unless someone can tell me of any user friendly files out there.

Thanks for your responses in advance.

Hey Hawk.

As some one who has a few foam suits on the go, one being Ironman and the other nearly finished I will give you my view on how the build might go, ( I will be attempting a helmet for my 2 month old son soon for fun so have though about how tricky it could be).

I agree with you on the choice of foam thickness. Anything over 1/4 will make smaller pieces tricky.

The build being smaller shouldn't be much different than any other build as you will always encounter small pieces, just you will encounter nothing but small pieces.

Looking forward to seeing this build as I am obviously an Ironman fan.

If you cant find any of the Ironman foam files let me know I will link them for you.

Drack, I sincerly thank you for replying to this thread, I don't think I could have hoped for someone as talented at you with the art of foam to reply to this. I just saw the first part of your IM suitcase build and I'm in awe of the detail on the first to pic post on page 1.

I don't know how soon I'll be able to get started on this but I sure am glad for any info you may put in on the way.

I have most the foam pep files from robo3867 but I would appreciate that helmet file in your suitcase armor thread if you can link me to that.

I may need some hints on scaling the armor if you can tell me how. I have a pic of my son and his dimensions, don't know if this is done correct but time will tell. (first try, I think)

Again, thanks for your reply!! (This is why I love the forums of the 405th)

No worries man.

As for the helmet file I honestly can't remember which it was now and didn't save the link. If you go to 4shared.com and type "iron man pdo" in to the search bar all the files made for pep will come up. The helmet will be there somewhere. If you have issues let me know and I will fire up the desktop to search. I would just post the link but better to teach others how to able find any file they need :)

As for scaling use this guide HERE.

Hope this helps,
Tom.

Drack, thanks for the info, the scaling tut worked well.

Ok, I got started on the build tonight and I'll have to tell you I love working with the foam. Like others have stated you will definitly burn through some blades.

Being as this is such a small build I had to find some 1/4" foam to work with. I searched Wally world up and down for the kids puzzle mats and all they had where the ones with the letters and numbers that popped out and that was about worthless (Came with a butt load pieces but was worthless). So I was discouraged and went home and then forgot something at wallyworld and on the way back I thought hey, I'll check Walgreens for grins...and what did I find, 1x1 square puzzle pieces, count of 9 and for only $5.99. Bought two packs, of course they were colored and I thought yay I can start....so I did.

Here are the results of my first attempt with foam and scaling.

Foam is fast, done all this in about 1-1/2 hours.

First pic to show how small it actually is.

Looking forward to it but have a lot of things going on for the next month or two so updates will be........I can't spell sparatic

.....o yeah, I forgot to mention, i'll still probably find some different foam because as you can see, the upside has a lot of embossed designs so it makes it a little difficult to glue and get good edges. O yeah, someone will have to tell me how to hide the glue lines later before final paint and what not.

Also, I wanted to give thanks to all who have contributed to this fine, fun and exciting craft of pepakura and thanks to all who have taken the time to design, unfold and share their files without asking for compensation, only a shout out!!!! You guys are awesome.

Special thanks to robo3867 for his pep to foam mods.

Here is the helmet I started on a few years ago, shot a quick paint job on it to get me excited again.
