Hey guys, long time lurker here finally putting up some head work for the world to see. As the title says, I'm currently making the N7 rebreather or whatever this thing is officially coined. This build won't be for myself so hopefully sharing my progress with you guys would motivate me even more to get this thing done. Also, I'd like to thank golem95 for graciously sharing the file I needed just for this project.

Unfortunately I didn't take much as far as progress pics go but here's what I can gather up. Watch as the image quality just dies down as this thing goes:p

My work table, not much but it got stuff done. Definitely not posture friendly though.

Here's some shots of the first lid. Not happy with it (splicing required,) so I moved onto another model. No offense to the modeler.

Which brings us to "Lazarus."

Size comparison to the Helghast edition bust. Fixed on the T-rex from Dinosaur Comics. You know, for the ladies.

Was panicking over how far the wings should be protruding. Thankfully after a couple rounds of ME3 multiplayer, I've found that they practically sit on the button.
Speaking of ME3 multiplayer. The human engineer models are pretty much on spot with ME2 Shepard's armor, right?

Got her on with little troubles, bit worried that may be an issue with my buddy's melon of a thinker.
Though looking at a couple reference pics, the inside of the ear that has been bothering me seems to actually be padding. Would I be correct about that?

Keep on truckn'

Thanks man, snazzy build by the way.

Had started with the resin coating process two days ago, just didn't think to take much pictures given all I have right now is my PSP cam attachment. But here's a shot before I get started with today's coats.

540363_327055824053577_1976976776_n.jpg

Just about 3 layers of resin, no problematic warping so far and Rex survived.

EDIT
May be getting ahead of myself here but I'm thinking of running some casts. Had some experience with the process but my main concern here are the wings/ribs on the back of this thing. Thinking I could just cut them off before applying the silicone but if there's a more convenient way of dealing with this situation I'm all ears.

looks really awesome, very clean und smooth paperwork - Can't wait to see how it looks after bondo+sanding :)

had to laugh as i saw your odst helmet in the last pic :D

Thanks, the ODST is a side project for myself I'm hoping to get into full gear once I have the time and funds. Only have a helm, a CQB variant shoulder from Jimmy Da Moose and Hugh's core traced on a couple foam sheets.
The builds for you and your bud's look awesome. Hope I can fix something as well as those eventually.

Done for the night, gonna be bringing the helm to a fellow builder's place tomorrow to pick up some filler and maybe a couple tools as well as compare notes. Hopefully I can get some picture worthy changes by then.

Here's a quick update bump to catch up on I've been up to while the site has been down.

Fancy

292046_331860983573061_1094834428_n.jpg

A bit of prepping for the filler on the top portion.
251506_331860906906402_190699776_n.jpg

Think it came out decently, foam tape did its job in providing some clean lines.
581608_334645999961226_169552656_n.jpg

Some prepping for the "sideburns." Used some clay to build up dams for filler.

249624_333276490098177_2099095393_n.jpg

Could use some correcting but the prepping sure did its job.

Hit it with some silver paint just because.

Definitely more later after a couple errands I have to run. Comments and tips are very much welcome.

;)

Coming along very nicely. Your work looks nice and smooth, a great representation of the helmet! Keep it up.

Thanks, loving your build by the way. Connector installment sure brought up ideas.

Wow... I had never thought or using filler "dams"... sure would have saved me some time. still looking awesome!

It's something I picked up while working on an earlier project. Also used clay to keep my mixing bowl reusable for a good while. Picture on that later if I can find it.

Apologize for not following up immediately once I got home, simply forgot the forum was back up.

So here's some initial prepping for the breather section. Working it in 3 parts in hopes to create a nice edge.

Think it came out decently.

Skipping the process for the other side, here's some more clay and foam tape work to preset the details.
391982_334645753294584_857968749_n.jpg

May have overdid it with the filler.
561630_334645929961233_1430777500_n.jpg

Sadly it didn't go as planned with the edging. But the vents, aside from some required correcting came out pretty okay.
251011_337185736373919_1133960782_n.jpg

Quickly corrected the edging issue with some epoxy putty. Feel pretty idiotic for not using the stuff sooner. In a later update I'll be showing how I used the material to create the similar details with putty alone.

Ending tonight's update with the obligatory strength test.

Stay awesome, 405th.

One trick you might want to try is instead of using te clay to isolate where you want a recess is to use the same foam tape you are using for edging. Cut it in the shape you want an bondo over it. When you sand down and hit the tape, you will have the correct shape and maintain a uniform depth. Then just use a razor to clean up the edges.

Though already tried it'll be noted and implemented more in the future. It was actually used for the nose vents right under the clay. It's just me being cheap and using an old and limited amount of tape that has seen its best days years ago. Any idea on if whole adhesive foam sheets exist? So far all I can find on the net are the self adhering kind.

Thanks for the input, ideas reinforced are ones worth keeping. Sweet commando lid by the way.

So with my pops back from the Philippines and still recovering from months of treatment I'm pretty much limited on work time. Well. I'm just not allowing myself to work in my own house to be frank. But having the great friends that I do they've allowed me to work at their places. Not as much as I'd like unfortunately. "Lives" and whatnot, but work is getting done. Bit of good news is that I got a phone with a pretty decent cam so LOOK AT THIS.

539521_347431405349352_587058759_n.jpg

Added some raised details to the top. Getting fresh with the putty to fix the many imperfections. Any of you guys know how to approach the issue of exposed paper after getting the surface to the right shape?

292789_347426248683201_521432635_n.jpg

Most recent work is on the back band.

250480_347428992016260_977956360_n.jpg

Prepping the raised details with the usual. Used some existing lines on the helmet as a guide for the tape.

318996_347430088682817_1034402223_n.jpg

Along cleaning up I noticed that I messed up a bit on the prepping. More work for one oversight.

550587_347430488682777_833788202_n.jpg

Bit of correcting work and more sanding later.

564891_347430295349463_837805717_n.jpg

One more shot for the otherside. Gonna need more sanding and some putty for touch up but I'm quite happy with the turnout. Also very glad that the preset detail I made a long while back with putty worked out and flushed into the band.

Here's the whole album for those cases I get stingy with the updates.

Input always welcome. Build smart, build safe, build with all your hearts and all that noise ;)

Looking awsome my friend. My I ask what the brand names are of rthe clay and foam tape I like the idea of a controlled working areawhen dealing with bondo

Brand escapes me, any foam mounting tape should work. Believe I used Sargent Art but I think most non hardening modeling clay you can find in office supply stores work fine - nothing too fancy for what you're gonna use it for. They usually come in boxes with four blocks in them.

Yes, looks good, love the look of it.

Thanks man

wow. thats the cleanest pepping ive ever seen. great job man.

Thanks man. Do you have any finished pics of your CQB? It's looking great from what I've seen.

Dude...Sick. Just sick! I always LOVED mass effects helmets...maybe some day i'll try those.

Would definitely recommend trying something from the games. Hoping to luck out on an Inferno helm down the line.

This update isn't as fruitful as the past ones but does get me quite excited seeing it near its full form.

60591_353207051438454_1357187400_n.jpg

The vents are individual plastic pieces that I saved from the CD holder section of a shelf I got rid of. Recycling, people.
Would like to thank my good bud GhostDude for fixing up the pieces with his dremel and as well as coming up with the idea for the build in the first place. Go and have a look at his stuff if you have the time.

Back with another small update. Deadline nearing and I still have to figure out the ear venting system. Things got desperate so I butchered one of my mask sculpts for the clay.

533931_356262164466276_1021181736_n.jpg

Foreseeing the challenge of creating a disk by hand. I rigged up a stool and disk holder with a bit of wire to help shape it out.

534494_356288414463651_212908741_n.jpg

Really wish I had a proper tool for this.
The other 8 slots are marked out now and it's roughly ready for the mold. It's quite obvious that my clay work leaves much to improve on. So I'm hoping to run 4 casts. Butcher two of them for the center piece and the other two for the rim for a cleaner look. This way I might be able to improve the symmetry of the slots without ruining any surrounding surfaces.

This took only a couple hours to get what I have now. If anyone has a better idea on how to get a cleaner product I'm willing to scrap this piece if the method and materials are accessible to me.

If it were me, I'd sculpt the piece in a harder wax based clay (I like Chavant) then mold it in silicone and cast it up in resin. Then maybe sand it down and polish it, then mold it again. That's me though, lol. The materials are easily accessible but can be pricy. You wouldn't need a whole lot of chemicals, so If you wanted to go that route, I would just get like the sample quantity. I would use Hard Chavant clay, Silicone GI-1000, and Smoothcast 320 resin.
