ODST Build WIP -First Build-

I'm updating this first post to add something that I forgot to make, an armor map:

Hello all, this is my first post on the forums. When I first saw this website a year ago, I felt two things, aw, and intimidation. I recently had visited the website again, this time creating a profile. After a bit of lurking, I started to make my creation using the pepakura method using Hugh Holder's models, which I find amazing. Here are the pieces that I have created so far. As of making this post, all of the pieces have yet to be resined. I plan to try to do that this weekend.

Update:
I started to resin the outside of the parts, I did four parts because I was testing it to see what it did. I think they turned out really well.

Alright, after this update I'll update on a weekly basis(Unless I reach a milestone). As of now, I have started to fiberglass the pieces.

The chest assets

In addition to doing this, I have started to make the chest core out of EVA foam. This is my first real time using this stuff, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm just stenciling the patterns on and cutting them out with a hobby knife.

It's creating quite a mess.

any ideas for your undersuit? ODST's aren't known to be head-to-toe in armour like a Spartan

Thanks! I'm thinking of getting a black flight suit for the under suit, and I'm getting some paintball gloves for the gloves, then hold the armor together with a nylon strip rig.

A few tips for the EVA foam; Stencils and hobbyknife is pretty standard. You could join the paper templates together before you trace it on the foam, that way you get bigger pieces, and make less cuts. Hot glue works well for holding the foam together. The foam is pretty easy to shape on it's own, but you can use a heat gun if to make it easier. Hope that helps.

Alright, I have finished the chest core out of foam. I really love how it turned out, and would much rather this be foam than fiber glassed paper. I was able to construct it in about 2 days, now I just need to paint and decal it. And thanks to Clothar for the advise, I really went in blind and his advised helped.

Update 03

Alright, here's another update. I'll call this one update 03. As for progress, I have finished glassing all the chest assets except for the main chest piece, do to resin drying before I could put it on. I have also finished glassing the two hip plates on the belt. Now for pictures:

First off, I have hot glued some clips to the chest core.

I have also done these little guys:

I ordered some webbing from amazon for a rig to hold everything together after everything's said and done.

I have also built most of the sliced pistol from halo reach(Done by Carpathia):

And the final thing, I now have another friend to help me along with the journey:

Update 04

Hello again, this is update 04. I have finished my chest core (95%) complete. All is left is the decal in some areas. I have also finished the side plates from the chest assets, and the bicep plates. I am not sure how often I will be able to fiberglass as of now(I live in Michigan and its that special time of the year) due to weather, so I'm hopping for a warm(er) day. Here are the pictures:

Alrighty, now here is the chest core:

Spine Plates; I added a piece of webbing so it would curve in.

Here's the FiberGlassed buckle on the front, as you see there's extra webbing hanging off if it, this is to allow a possible rig that I haven't worked out yet

And here is the top outside buckle on the back. I made it so that It wouldn't be held in place, but so it would have some slack to make it was possible to get this thing on/off by myself

And that concludes my update. I still need to put the "ODST" on the back of the piece, and if anyone has any suggestions how, I would really appreciate it. What I'm planning to do now is cut out a pattern of the letters in the font from paper with a hobby knife, and just wipe over is with white paint. As for battle damage, I have already made a start at wiping the edged with some metallic paint. All comments and advice is appreciated

Chiefer-Thanks! When I was doing research on this project, I looked at your thread a lot for tips and techniques, as a matter of fact your thread persuaded me to make the core out of foam!

Clothar-Really? I wasn't sure how it turned out due to my inexperience with using foam, and I'm glad to hear from a person who exclusively uses foam that they're good. Thanks!

Impressive. You've done a lot of clean pepping, although I don't know much about foam that appears to be going nicely as well. Cant wait to see this develop

Thanks, it sure look a long time to get the whole kit together, went through like 20 glue sticks, and I'm on the same boat as you as far as the foam goes. I do think its an improvement, because if, (when), I trip or fall on my back there won't be any chance of it cracking.

And as as general update, two things:
One, my flight suit has arrived, and I am happy with it

And two, I am thinking of making the butt plate out of foam, do to me not wanting to crush a fiberglass one if I fall, so I'll see how that goes. As far as the rig to hold everything together, I found these things laying about and am hopping to find a use for them. Any suggestions on a rig would be highly appreciated!

Update 05

Sorry for two posts so close together, I have done a lot this night, and have found some methods of doing things that work for me in regards to painting. I have painted(and weathered) all of the chest assets with the exception of the main chest piece, which requires more fiberglass resin. I have also done this with the belt and the bicep plates, and have began to make the hip plates from foam(I'll start the butt plate tomorrow). Here are the pictures.
