Re: Starting my ODST build

still working out some dents but it is slowly getting there, I need to get some spot filler, what is a good one to get? or should i just go with the bondo spot putty?

Re: Starting my ODST build

That's looking good. But, remember: sometimes a pesky dent will better serve your helmet as battle damage rather than smoothing it.

that is true, I have been going back and forth on what to fix and what to leave. there are a few dents that i could fix but it would almost require rebuilding a area out of bondo. I plan on casting and pulling a resin copy so I can fix some things with a heatgun and proper physical persuasion.

Re: Starting my ODST build

a little more progress on my helmet, threw another coat of primer on so i can see what I am doing

still needs a lot of love on the back but I wanted to focus on the front and make sure that was looking good.

Re: My first ODST build

alright update time.

I made some adjustments to my torso so that the shoulders rounded off more, because before they just went straight out at 90 degree angles.

You can see the difference in that picture, and I think it looks a lot better.
For a quality of life improvement I ripped the side off and added velcro so that I don't have to squeeze my entire body through the torso in one piece.

As for the helmet, more sanding and another coat of paint.

The suit looks a lot better when I have the helmet on I must say it is really what pulls the whole thing together

Well thats all I got today!!!

Re: ODST build

alright small update, working on making the mold for the helmet. Using DragonSkin Fast from Smooth-On. ended up using two and a half trial kits, so this ran me a good $90 to make. going to plaster it up and try and pull a cast tomorrow.
Wish me luck!

Everything looks pretty good, a few bubbles were in the mold but nothing a little sandpaper cant fix.

Alright tonight I painted my helmet and took an obligatory bathroom selfie.

I am still trying to figure out what to do for the visor. right now it is just the cast plate with aluminum tape on it for placeholder. I want to vacuum for but I don't have one and I don't know anyone with one. I can try and make my own but I need the helmet done for Anime Boston this weekend.

Nice mold! When in doubt, you can always use a temporary visor for Boston, then create a proper one afterwards. Keep it up!

Wow. Great job on this build man! I'm always impressed by good mold work.
Thank you! I really appreciate it, I have learned a whole lot during this whole process and I look forward to my next one.

Ya I may have to do that, right now I am building a quick vacuum form rig to see if I can get at least one good one in time but i am having difficulties right now, need a better way to heat the plastic. I am going to try and go to the thrift shop tomorrow and see if I can get a cheap toaster oven to use.

I'm not sure if there are any complications involved, but I have heard of people straight up using their kitchen oven to heat the plastic. I can, of course, understand one's reservation to do that. Picking up a cheap toaster at the goodwill or something probably would be pretty easy.

Exactly how complicated is it to make a small vac-form rig? I somehow always assumed it was a bit on the troublesome side.

well for the base all I really did was make a wood box with holes in it that my shop vac can plug into, then I made two little frames to sandwich the plastic between. really the issue is coming down to heating the plastic properly.

hey all sorry for no posts, I have been away and busy. I wanted to give an update.
So the vacuum form machine is still a WIP and I am trying to make that work still but for Anime Boston I ended up just using a sheet of plexiglass that was bent and chromed, not what I wanted but it worked. I had a great time over the weekend and met a whole bunch of cool people and a few 405th members as well.

For what its worth, I think your stopgap visor looks really good, albeit more like the Halo 2 era ODSTs than the ones we know and love today.
