Alright, I've seen a lot of topics in various forums here asking the same thing: "can my fiberglassed armor withstand paintballs /airsoft BB's / tire irons thrown by Chuck Norris?" Well ok, no one has asked if their armor will withstand a barrage of tire irons from Chuck Norris, so heres results of an airsoft gun.

To start, the gun I used in my tests was a CO2 powered SiG Sauer SP2022 pistol. It has a 15 round magazine, and uses a 12 gram CO2 cartridge to fire .20g BB's at speeds up to 370 feet per second (252 miles per hour)

For a target, I took my halo 3 Legendary Edition box and applied one layer of fiberglass cloth and enough resin to saturate said cloth to each side of the inside of the box. It's a bit sloppy but it works great for a pellet trap.

I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures, they were all taken with my camera phone.

For the test, I loaded 15 BB's into the magazine with a brand new CO2 cartridge then proceeded to empty the clip point blank into the outside portion of the box, taking care to pull the barrel away from the box each time to let any BB's that didn't go through the box roll out of the barrel.

the results:

After emptying all 15 rounds, it was noted not a single one made it through the box, let alone through the first layer of fiber glass. After seeing this, I decided to empty another magazine to make it an even 30. Even then not a single round went through. the cardboard on the outside had a small hole punched into it that looks like it was done with a pencil tip, and the fiberglass that was hit bulged out less than a millimeter.

note the white discolored area furthest to the left, that is where all of the BB's impacted.

Based on these results, I think it's safe to say that against an airsoft gun firing at 370 fps point blank, your armor will hold up perfectly.

nice man

i found myself wondering this today actually because i rememberd Megacon has a HEUGE airsoft event in one of the rooms there, and iiii really dont feel like taken off my armour, only to put it back on bout 15-30 mins later. looks like i know im more than set with 4-5 layers of fiberglass :D

sounds like it. although despite the armors durability, its going to

A. make everyone go after you like n00bs after a flaming helmet clad player on XBL

2. depending on how you built it, your motion wil be hindered,

and G. your vision will be impaired moderately to severely.

well the airsoft event is hosted by the Col. marine group from Aliens

if i start running out of ammo from ppl ganing up on me ill just start butting ppl lol

i love a challenge :D

Make sure you wear airsoft/firing glasses underneath. Although motorcycle visors should suffice, someone should test that next.

They have tested it. And it was an epic fail. Unless you want about 300 shards of glass fyling in to your face..

nice test, the two different types of fiberglass have different results though. like, cloth will be more resilient than mat.

at least, thats what i think, maybe you should try that.

I thought about grabbing mat while i was at the Ace hardware store in my area, but they didnt carry it and i only had like 40 bucks to my name at the time. When i come home from college or if by some miracle i can find some in the next 3 days before i leave, I'll post results.

Wow thats nice! I know the fiberglassed armor can handle airsofting but seeing that right there makes me think that it is safe to use it. Still I'm going to add a few extra layers :D

thats a cool test, but after hearing that the visor can shatter, im thinking its not a good idea atleast for the helm not the rest of the armor

Fiberglass Mat is suppose to be stronger the Cloth, Cloth is cleaner and gets more Detail as it is easier to sand. Mat is made to be some tough stuff though isn't the greatest when trying to get some detail.

At least that is what I heard.

I would to expect the cloth to be stronger just because of the structure. In it being woven like carbon fiber or kevlar. Yet lining the inside of your armor with those two would be just BAD ASS! haha :D

well, both cloth and mat have their places. cloth is a bit easier to work with for those who haven't worked with fiberglass alot, mainly because its woven and requires less resin than mat. Mat on the other hand is a bit tricker because its just random fiberglass threads infused in a binder and requires a TON more resin to get the best results

i woudl still say this is a horribly bad ida. the AS pistol you used is not the high quality that is used at most common AS events where the AEG's and green gas powered pistols are fired at between 374 and 450 feet per second. with a .25 round. a .20 round fired at 375fps does not equal a .26 round fired at 375fps. i dont knwo anyone who still fires .20 never mind the .12g's

i woudl take extreame caution playing AS in your armor, not to mention it WILL break, be destroyed from either gettign shot at repeadedly, kneeling running, and general physical activity, as well as you possibly sweatign up a storm and gettign dehydrated.

also check with the game organizers to see if you can play in that armor and pass safty checks. i woudl agree with the person that said wear your AS ANZI rated full seal glasses while playing. im pretty sure a MS helmet visor is not rated for ANZI for high impacts repeadedly hittign it.

im not tryign to discourage you, just makign sure you dont get hurt or destroy your costume.
