Electromagnet's For Chest Piece

So I had the idea of using moderately strong electro magnets for my chest piece.

I know that this would probably never work due to my extremely bad knowledge of physics etc.

But I thought it would be cool if you could just have a switch to keep the armour locked in place instead of having to pull it apart every time you have to take it off.



I posted in this forum cos' as I've already said, I'm a noob at physics :lol

The coils might get hot and might also draw a lot of power(relatively) I know for door's it's only 3 like watts... But I don't know how bulky your coils would need to be... It could be done, but I doubt any better/cheaper than than this.

My idea was to have hundreds of thin wires instead of a few thick bulky ones, to avoid a using up a lot of voltage and creating a large amount of heat. And it would be very powerful.

Um, hate to break it to you but really thin wires are known as resistor which disperse energy as heat. The thinner the wire the hotter it gets and the poor-er magnet it makes.

wow..sounds like these armor suites r trin to get high texh to the point of being actual mj armor lol..goodidea tho if u can work the heat n voltage issues out....but has anyone thought of maybe going reallly low tech and recessing a few 2 dollar hinges in the top part of the chest plate where it meets the back?..well thats what im gonna try w mine anyway..just curriouseif anyone else has done that..great idea about the electro mags anyway..gl

I recommend using a hinge of some kind along with some small bolts. Or you could use Clips inside the armor itself.

Why not just use some very powerful neodymium permanent magnets? I don't see what benefit an electromagnet could possibly provide you in this situation. You would just be adding unnecessary complication (and the weight of batteries) where something as simple as a buckle does the same job.

Hey I Think Magnets might be cool! the only problem with electro magnets is that you need to have an energy supply somewhere in the suit.

here is a picture of a magnet that does not use electricity but can sort of be turned on and off almost like an electro magnet. [attachment=11264:Magnet.JPG] This is just my magnetic base that I use in my shop so I know this is absolutely huge and it would never fit. But the concept might lead to a better idea.

Besides the heat issue, you'll be constantly changing out power sources not to mention luging them around with you. Natural magnets would be more cost effective in the long run.



Have you given thought to latches in combination with magnets like some entertainment center cabinet doors employ? These.

Ive been thinking about using magnets to attach an assault rifle to the back of my odst costume with using any straps and THANKYOU i think you've just found me the solution!

It doesn't turn of, it just turns away, which is why it's so bulky.



you can't get energy from nowhere (yet ), and once your battery runs out, your whole armour becomes unusable. go the mechanical way.
