First Build - Iron Man Helmet

Ok guys, relatively new to the 405th, have posted a few times here and there, so maybe some of you will recognise the screen name. Seeing as how I'm part of a community, I figured I should share what I have done so far.

Some of you may be aware that I made a BIG error, and have made 3 helmets, and a predator bio mask, using sellotape. (Shoulda read the stickies first, I know...). Anyways, I have since made another helmet, which because of crappy british weather, I probably won't be able to resin until next summer.

This is for my new, GLUED Iron Man Helmet, and I am hoping that I can get some constructive criticism.

Also, if anyone has any ideas as to whether I can salvage my sello-taped babies without having to start again, I would be eternally grateful. I was thinking maybe giving them a thin coat of hot glue all over, and then resining them might work, but I would like the input of someone who knows what they're doing before going ahead with this hair-brained scheme...

Here is my new helm, Sharkheads file (I am aware I havn't put the mouth in yet.)

Remarkably, one of the tape jobs was another one of these helmets, although on the whole I'm much happier with how this one turned out, tape or not. I'm guessing from the fact no-one has given any critiscism that I did good? Anyone who can help me with my crappy weather problem, suggestions would be great, seeing as I'd love to have this one very very soon. Ideas as to how/where to resin without the need for the bright sunshine would come in very handy. Thanks for the inputs so far though guys!

Use a garage and space heater. Don't put ANYTHING including your armor near the heater. The heat will make everything cure faster(or at all if you weather is really bad).

Be very cautious when using heaters and resins or bodyfiller or paint for that matter. NEVER use a heater with an open falme. Fiberglass resin and Bondo body filler both give off toxic/flameable fumes until cured. A flash fire could occur. Were talking 1500+ degrees F!!!

As for saving the tape jobs......I have taped my entire Iron Man suit thus far. I have helm, chest, neck, abs all done (pep). Im am currently fiberglassing and Bondoing the helm. The way I did it was to coat the entire helm inside and out with Krylon clear coat before glassing or bondo. Very light coats and about 4 coats total. This seals the paper/cardstock and makes it less likely to get saturated when glassing. I didnt have any problems with the tape not holding with this process. Also, I lightly coat the inside of the helm with the glass resin and let dry over night with no matting or cloth. Following day I recoat the inside of the helm with resin and then put my cloth on and then coat the cloth with resin. Work in small sections and with small overlapping pieces of cloth/matting.

Thank you for your advice and warning, both of which are very helpful. I should hopefully get the resin done today, as the weather isnt too bad. More pics up once it's done.

EDIT: I resined a bicep piece today, seeing as how it was rather warm and sunny. No sooner had I changed out of the clothes I was wearing into clean ones, when the heavens opene and chucked it down for about 10 mins. All in all, piece ruined.

Very clean helmet! Gotta love sharkheads helmet. I would agree with a garage and heater. Just make sure not to go near the heater with your pieces and don't forget to wear the respirator.

Ok, got the mouth piece glued in last night (been putting it off as I was sure I'd muck it up in some way or another). Just given most of the outside a coat of resin, going to go check on it in about half an hour, and hopefully I'll have some pics up by tonight!

OK, quick note, unfortuneately, it warped some around the ears. Im not particularly happy about that, however, I was thinking about restarting it from scratch anyway. Much though I was pleased with the outcome of this one when I first pepped it, many people have done much cleaner glue-jobs than I managed. Im going to throw caution to the wind here and say this is because I used a glue-gun, instead of just 'normal', very strong glue. If anyone would like to suggest a good glue for pepping with that DOESNT need a glue gun, for example, loctite super glue or something like this 'elmers' stuff I'm reading about a lot, that I can pick up in the UK, I would be ecstatic. Thanks in advance to anyone who manages to help me out here.

OK guys, got the resin done on the outside. Again, any constructive criticism is a great help.

Hope to get the fibre-glassing done tomorrow, weather pending. This is going a darn-sight quicker than I expected it to, seeing as it's now officially 'get cold' time in the U.K., and, remarkably, today was better weather than any day during the summer!

EDIT: I glassed most of it, but I've run out of hardener, unfortuneately, so it may be a VERY long time until I can get some, what with bills and such. I shall post pics when im done glassing it, as it has warped some. Hopefully when I'm done glassing it, I can bondo it so it's symmetrical again, then put in the details!
