Halo 3 Ending Aftermath

After the credits, it is revealed that SPARTAN-117 and Cortana are still alive aboard the rear section of the Dawn, which had apparently torn off before going through the other side of the portal. The SPARTAN floats to a cryotube and as he climbs in, Cortana comments "I'll miss you." He replies "Wake me, when you need me." If the last level is completed on Legendary difficulty, the section of Forward Unto Dawn that Cortana and the Chief are aboard is seen drifting towards an unknown planet.
All in all, there's not much room for speculation. MC and Cortana float derelict for a while and then crash into a planet. Really the only thing to speculate on is what planet they crash into.

You may very well know this, but I just don't want you to get in trouble with one of the moderators or something. Anyway, it's true that in the legendary ending of Halo 3 you see the half of the ship containing John and Cortana falling into the atmosphere of some planet. Now, I've never watched halo legends so I have no idea if there is ever any mention of what that planet is, but if you read the halo books I've always assumed that the planet was Onyx from the book Ghosts of Onyx. ***SPOILER ALERT*** At the end of Ghosts of Onyx, I thought I remeber it saying that the ground and rock parts of the planet were destroyed as the safe room at the heart of the planet closed sealing the surviors inside, leaving basically a giant artificial sphere. At least, maybe this is what I imagined happening as the planet activated. The only reason I mention this though is that the planet they show at the end of the legendary ending looks like a normal planet as far as I can tell, so maybe it's not Onyx after all if Onyx is now just a giant artificial sphere after activating. Personally though, I still hope it is Onyx because it's my favorite book out of the series and I really want to see what happens to the survivors/John and Cortana.
