Okay so i was readin Halo, the contact harvest the 2nd time and i noticed something:

-Contact Harvest. page 113, line 7.
"One of my snipers thought different. Put a hasty round through the wall of his house, tore the guy in half. But he pulled the pin on reflex."

I just tought that the grenade might have a pin... just wanted to let you know if anyone is interested.
(they might have removed the pin because of graphical animation issues...)
Since we (nearly everyone on the site) believe that the grenade works with a button... wich is propably true...

Perhaps the pin is the safety?

Pull pin, push button, throw?

wouldnt that be just one more step

You also have to remember you have to push that handle in also

No but when you look at the grenade the 'red' area looks like there would be some sort of a plastick cover untop of it... or then it's holding a pin.
Also i like seans idea...
Also note that Bungie hasnt actually told anyone how the grenade works (that i know of)

Oh yeah the grenade button (if it has one). might be skin sensiteve so that it only reacts when skin touches the button... that technology already exists with computer mousepads (and my hp quick launc buttons... the buttons on your laptop wich you use to set the volume etc.) but this wouldnt make any sense with the spartans gloves or elite skin...

Also "pull handle", the handle definetaly doesnt exist in halo.

I was thinking of the wrong grenade the one from halo 1 and 2

The one form 3 is

Well since the grenades are like strapped to the armor or something and facing away, it would be hard to accidently press the button, plus the button might be hard to press down so that adds some more security.

Yeah, Spartan 051 got it right. Remember that Contact Harvest is the very beginning of the human-Covenant war, and takes place years (20, isn't it?) before Halo 1. In Halo 1 (and 2 I think) the frag does indeed use the classic pin and lever arm. The Halo 3 version uses a button. I don't remember why, I remember seeing it on Halopedia.

Spartan 061's on the right track. The rebels didn't use the same high grade UNSC equipment most of the time. I was reading a theory though, about the grenades. It mentioned that the push button arms it, but the chemical fuse doesn't start until the grenade hits the ground. I think it may have been on Halopedia.

Well the could be similar to the new riot grenades be made in Germany, they use a push button. The button has to be depressed till the green led goes red then throw.... it will only detonate after an impact...

There has never been a pin and lever grenade in any Halo game. The frag has been the button one since the begining. H1, H2, and H3 all used the same grenades, except Halo 3 introduced the spike and firebomb grenades.

Again, no pins were every in a Halo game.

Well yes, they never put the pin in the game because it was beyond Bungie's capabilities at the time. The pin was just understood to be there, and was mentioned in novels and such. But the frag grenade in H1 did have the lever arm (I don't know the correct, proper term), it's right there in the top picture you quoted!

mabye this is because this story is based years before the actual HALO story, and frags still have pins...

im pretty sure that matches the models that were pulled form halo 1

im just against that because if you want to "cook" the grenade so the other person doesnt throw it back on you (like in cod 4). I pretty sure there cases in the halo world were you need to do that.

The only reason why i think people use that theory is that in the game you have to wait for the grenade to hit the ground the wait for the 3 secs. Theres time in the multi player were i throw a grenade and it doesn't go off because i die before the grenade hits the ground after i die

but that could just be me
