Hey, people, I've recently been looking to find some Leuco Dye. If you know what it is, great, if not, it's basically colour changing dye (Follow the link for more info). My main problem has not been finding suppliers, but rather finding a supplier that will sell in small amounts. The closest I've gotten is this site right here, but, most unfortunately, they are sold out of the black to clear variety, which is the only kind I would get. With all the experience people have on this forum, I figured that someone here maybe knew where to get some. I'm certainly not asking other people to search for me, as that's my job, but if anyone has a source off-hand, that'd be so awesome.

Going to try to eventually get to this.

Thanks!

Ah, I should have put that in the OP. I had already found that, but they don't sell their leuco dyes in amounts less than 1 kg. And I certainly don't need a whole kilo of the stuff for one mask! Thanks for putting it up, anyways.

Edit: Oh, just did a little more searching, and found that you can order samples! Rube, thanks for making me look at that site again!

If you have trouble with making the mask, Kwally at the RPF is taking orders for these, reasonably priced. He also has posted up some Rorschach patterns that make best use of the heat from breathing on the inks. Still waiting for some progress shots though.

I'm kinda interested in getting one of these masks or making one.. dunno why because I couldn't see myself cosplaying Rorschach. Just kinda interested as a novelty. Still, I'd love to see your results with the Leuco dyes, please keep us posted!

Oh, that's interesting, thanks Sean. Especially the part where he said it is not a straight up ink, but you have to mix it. Since that coulour change site has the stuff weighted in grams, I'd assume it's a powder that is mixed into water (Since I'm looking at the water based ink). These are clues that I'm not doing everything wrong! Since I cannot for the life of me find a sample ordering page that has the Leuco dyes as an option on the colour change site, I emailed their customer support, and am waiting for an email back.

From the looks of their website I think you'd be better off calling them for information. Just have that feeling...

I was gonna wait until around Monday, then call if they didn't respond, since I'm busy all weekend. (Watching the Watchmen and all :p)

Yeah, The YouTube guy (Sculptzor @ the RPF) is still denying that Leuco dyes are what he used.. But he's still not saying what he did use.

Either way, I'm still interested in this.

I really can't think of anything else he could use. I was originally looking at some thermochromic paints, and was wondering how he had gotten the paint layer so thin, then kinda hit my head after I found out about leuco dyes.

Though I recall reading somewhere that his was a special mix, so maybe he has access to the equipment to make thermochromic dyes without call them leuco dyes. But honestly, I don't really care to know exactly how he did his. It's much more fun to try to figure it out yourself!

theres a thread over on proptopia about this. someone emailed a supplier about it, explaining the whole situation to him. the guy responded fairly quickly and told him that he had received several emails about the dyes a day or two after that video and auction was put up. im not sure if the supplier was talking about the person that held the auction, but i know he said that someone had gotten some of the dye for the same project. he even listed what dye was bought. ill see if i cant get some more info and post back up as soon as i find something out. this project is on my to-do list also.

Cool, maybe we can do some collaboration on what ideas work/don't work. (For example, I buy a fabric, use it, and either endorse it or advise against it).
