Shoulders Done, got a helmet from EVAkura in the mail, and thrusters are most of the way there. I angled the Vents open on the thrusters so they can light up. Not totally accurate to the game texture but eh, it'll look cool.

Hello all, I have a small update to share. Building is now mostly complete, the exception being the chest plate which still has a few small details to finish up. I would really like to have an ab wrap, but I'm focussing on the essential parts of the suit first. The MK7B helmet is trimmed up, and I have already put hours into sanding the AR. About half of the armor parts are plastidipped, and I'm aiming to finish the other half tonight. PXL_20220718_235742135.jpgPXL_20220718_235653188.jpgPXL_20220718_235649965.jpg

I used this $30 one handed reciprocating saw from Harbor Freight (sold as a "body saw") to cut the visor out and it worked like a charm. It was a much easier than using a Dremel like I have in the past. I also got started on the lights for my chest plate.

The vents on the thrusters will flicker blue or orange.

That's all for now, I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of you at C2!

Cheers!

With C2E2 drawing closer, I've been making a mad dash to get everything built for the MK7. Here's a photo dump from the last few months:

Boots, thrusters and shoulders left to build. I ordered paint, primary will be red as you see on the recon helm above. I need to add a buckle to the belt as I've already damaged it several times putting it on (it has to go on like a pair of pants ATM). I don't think I'm going to have time to finish a weapon prop for c2e2, though I would have liked to make a matching infinite AR. I have a sidekick I could probably finish in time but it looks am awful lot like I real gun. Maybe I'll just paint the whole front orange. I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on this. How comfortable does everyone feel bringing UNSC weapon props in general?

Anyway, nearing the end of the build, just have to keep the intensity up for a few more weeks!

Best,
Crimson
Looking great! cant wait to see the finished product!
the Mk7B part had me confused at first lol but I caught on

Haha yeah I named the thread incorrectly when I made it. I didn't realize that the 7B was the helmet and the suit was just 7.

More painting!

I'm using Montana Black "Fire Rose" for my primary color, and toothpaste as masking fluid. It's working pretty well but does require some clean up if it smears around when you wipe it off. I also discovered the wonders of Bondo spot putty while filling and sanding my AR. It's my new favorite thing.

Everything is coming along nicely I see. I gotta say I'm really impressed by your ways with the foam. I thought everything was 3d printed until I looked closer. Mad respect my dude.

After a week and a half painting, the mk7 is finally painted. I can no longer discern what is reality and what is not, but it's painted, by golly.

So now I have to finish painting the MK7B helm and the assault rifle, then it's on to weathering.

Painting is pretty much done. I have the AR left to weather still but all of the armor parts are completed.

For those who care, my painting process was as follows:

-plasti dip (or orime for non-foam parts)
-silver base coat
-apply masking fluid (I used toothpaste
-red top coat
- mask off grey sections
-apply grey coat
-remove masking
-weather edges with base coat silver sprayed into cap
-hand paint gunmetal metallic and some hard to reach black areas
-weather with black acrylic diluted with water

I started wiring up some of the electronics last night. Here's a list:

Helmet
-Fans
-Shooting headphone electronics for hearing
-Speakers and mic for speaking

Chest
-Lights
-Fans

I have to mount my visor pretty soon which is a daunting task.

Looking forward to C2E2!

Last night I finished installing the electronics and padding into my helmet. After C2E2 I will do a full write up on the electronics side of things; here's some pictures in the meantime. The visor is tacked in with gorilla hot glue.

Tonight I will be mounting the chest electronics, strapping the knees, and coding the audio processor which helps stop the microphone from feeding back.

I am looking forward to your write up!

C2E2 was such a blast. It was so fun meeting everyone and it has me really excited to keep improving on this suit.

Things mostly worked as intended on the show floor this weekend, there are just a couple of minor annoyances I need to account for:
-My knees don't stay straight because there only held on by one strap to the thigh. Should be easy to fix with a little more support to the top of the shin.
-My harness needs a strap across the chest or back to keep the the shoulders from sliding down.
-My 3d printed MA40 gets heavy fast, foam props for me from now on!
-The in helmet speakers are a neat gimmick, but the voice amps that RandomRanger, NobleofDeath16 and BobRossIsMaDad had could get way louder so I'm going to pick one up.
-Shoe goe in or over magnets. Super glue is brittle and cracks away from the foam as it bends. I'm also going to add styrene to my foam on foam magnet attachments like for the shoulders. The force of the magnets has just about fused the paint layers on my shoulder connections together.

I'd also like to make some cosmetic tweaks:
-Slightly longer forearms and some kind of bracer attachment
-New boots with a slight lift.
-New shins that are a tad bulkier to complement said boots.
-Neck seal with more detail
-Thigh pouch for carrying stuff around the con floor.

I'm planning to do a write up of my helmet electronics in the nearish future so be on the lookout for that, as well as some more pictures as they start to roll in.
