Mold Making with Jello?!

from the looks of it, looks like it's good to cast things like low temp chocolate and all, but probably not resin due to the heat... also, it says it probably doesn't work too well for fine detailing D=

The resin would eat through the jello because of the fumes and toxicity. But still, this is a crazy but awesome method.

Actually, I can see this working with resin, if you mold half of the object, then freeze it, it will be hard enough to stay solid, it might work. If you let the resin cure for many many days with fiberglass in it, then melt it down and the jello would come off.

This is a crazy awesome method.

EDIT: I want to do this, but with natrual jello powder, not the flavored type, I could make a much thicker jello using pure jello powder, not the name brand stuff. But this, I can really see it working.

Oh, so it has to be thicker to get more detail?

No. the thicker, I just think will stand better against the heat and stay more solid, jello brand jello stuff has barley any jello powder in it, thats why it's so jiggly. But more jello powder, the thicker.

EDIT: Dont make me try this and make a tutorial about it :p

Wow! thats really inventive, someone should make mini MC chocolates using this method

Gelitine gets used in the effects industry all the time, 80% of the facial appliances in the lord of the rings were made with it.

Fiberglass resin needs heat to cure, so you couldn't freeze it.
I know this, and so far thats the only drawback. But what if I used my crazy ghetto hot glue mold idea, where the inside of the actual mould was brushed with melted hot glue, though it would be hot, it wouldnt melt the frozen jello right away, it would need constant heat to melt the jello. Then resin and fiberglassing the hot glue would give it even more strength.

All crazy ideas, but I might try this.

I am going to try this. I shall make chocolate something-or-others. I need to get a MC to chocolate mold :D

I think I might try to make a 2-part jello mold. Not sure exactly how, but I have ideas...

Ooo...could you elaborate on this?

Well, I tried it, but I used gelatin packets instead of jello. I used 2 packets for every cup of water, and it was fairly sturdy. You can still rip it with a bit of force though. I'll be testing with 3-4 packets per cup of water. I was also successfully able to make a two-part gelatin mold that worked pretty well. I molded an apple to begin with, but I'll try to make a more complex shape later.

Going to test this with robogen's handplate soon, once I get done making my other pep projects, I will bondo a hand plate and see how gelatin works, then see how it freezes, then see how hot glue poured into the frozen mold works. I'm hoping it will be cold enough to maintain shape and cure the hot glue, but still have time for the glue to seep into every nook and cranny. It's a 1 shot attemp, either it works, or it doesnt.

I want the final casted piece to be solid hot glue.

Sounds awesome, good luck!

People tell me hot glue being hot glue still will melt with high temperature. But it will never get hot enough to melt the thing unless you're in miami florida during the hottest summer days. It isnt going to get over 100 degrees everyday... Plus, resining the nside and outside lightly will keep it's shape if it did ever get that hot. The hot glue may become soft, but wont lose shape, the resin will help it.

I think for the price, to make a one off flexible mould you may as well use alginate, that's what its for
