Mold Substitutes

Not spliting hairs with you... I say use whatever you feel comfortable with... I am definately not on here trying to sell you something more than just education... bottom line is Silicone caulk was not made specifically for mold making, being an air cured product with a high viscosity sometime makes the silicone not cure in large sections... that is why we don't make it... trust me, we would make money if we did and it was viable... an average tube of silicone caulk at Home depot is $5.97 for a 10oz tube (the pure silicone NOT the latex/silicone mixture) which equals out to $9.55/lb... silicone caulk is basically a tin silicone... Mold Max Stroke which is our version of a tin silicone specifically formulated for brush on mold making is $8.36/lb... no cure issues and actually made for the application you are trying to accomplish... again, not trying to start any war, like everyone else I am just always looking for ways to cut my cost myself... and if you only need a small amount, by all means use the caulk but if you need more than just a small quanity the price breaks start to get a little blurred...

ya i know what you mean. i pay half of that at walmart though so it's only $5/lb for me. also did you know that adding a little bit of bleach to the mix will act as a catalyst and the silicone cures in 1/100 of the normal time? so after i put on a thin detail coat i mix up a large batch with bleach to make a stronger, thicker mold. still it all depends on the person, their preference, where they buy from, and their budget. also the bigger the part, the more you're better off using the brush on stuff. i use caulk because my projects/parts are small and don't need the pro stuff.

so just to get this straight, if I were to apply caulk (sillicon) into say a small pep piece it will or wont need a release agent as beaker said sillicon only sticks to sillicon, so it wouldnt stick to the paper mold (BTW this is for a one time mold) then I cure that and pour in some SC321 which I have laying around use some vaseline as the release? also a thought I had about alternatives what about hotglue? pour it into the piece let it harden remove the paper original then you should have a negative to mold from would it have an adverse reaction to having SC poured into it?

silicone would be absorbed in the paper use something to harden or seal it

Silicone caulk sticks, thus the reason it is caulk.. mold making silicone doesn't stick to anything

good to know, called reynolds since its normal hours they answered some additional questions of mine, gonna make my negative from a pep piece w/ hotglue because I have it on hand, then once thats finished pour some SC into that to get the piece

I've been thinking of using the caulk method for my DMR, but I was thinking of using Rondo to make the casts, would this work?
