New Use For The Blog!

Or at least I hope it's a new use. o_O My apologies if someone else came up with it already, but anyways here's the gist:

What I propose is that we combine the quote feature already present on the threads with the blog feature that almost no one uses. Check out my 405th blog from my profile to see what I mean.

This method will help you consolidate some of the informative but GIANT threads here on the site. For instance, Thorssoli's elite thread is 466 posts and counting! If I'm looking for specific information, I can use the search function, but what if I'm gathering the best of the best (IMHO) of the various tutorials and progress threads to use as reference material that I can follow and refer back to from time to time? I COULD print it all out and highlight the heck out of it if I had a few reams of paper lying around, but let's be honest. About 75% of the thread is just people saying "Nice armor! I like it." or asking questions that have already been answered, especially with the mega threads like Thorssoli's. These can be weeded out so you can consolidate down to the meat of the posts--predominantly the original author's posts with a few choice replies and questions from other people.

So anyways, here's the step-by-step if you choose to try this out:
  1. Open two windows/tabs for the 405th. One for thread reading, one for blog posting.
  2. Go through the steps of creating a new blog if you haven't already. If you have certain threads in mind, create categories for those. For instance, I'm using many of Thorssoli's techniques on my armor, so I'm going to create a "Thorssoli Method" category.
  3. Go to the thread you want to consolidate and start on page 1. Start clicking on the "quote" button on any of the posts you want to keep.
  4. When you get to the bottom of the page you're on, click the "add reply" button.
  5. Select all the text you see and copy it to the clipboard.
  6. Go to your blog window and give it a logical name like "Thorssoli Method Page 1."
  7. If you created categories, choose the pertinent one.
  8. Paste the contents of the clipboard into the text area.
  9. Post your new blog entry.
Oh, and make sure you quote any questions that the original poster replies to, because this doesn't work for quotes of quotes when they quote the question before answering it. You're also limited to 10 quotes per blog post, but if you run into that problem as I have (I'm currently set up to view 40 posts per page rather than the default 20), just start erasing quote tags until you get under the 10 quote limit.

And if you want to organize it even further, since the blog lumps all your posts in reverse chronological order:
  1. Look under the "Last Entries" content block on the right of the page.
  2. Copy the link for the entry you just created.
  3. Create a new custom content block and name it "Page Listings" or whatever makes sense for you.
  4. Write a heading for each thread you're consolidating. For instance "Thorssoli Method."
  5. Under that, type "Page 1", select it, and click on the "Insert Link" button.
  6. Paste the link and hit "OK"
  7. Then click on the "Submit Changes" button on the bottom like you were posting a thread reply.
  8. Rinse and repeat for any other pages from the thread you created.
Hope this helps you all to organize your reference threads and keep track of tidbits you find in and around the 405th.

1 - Options (tab on thread, upper right)
2 - Download Thread (forth option down)
3 - Save in either Word or HTML format or print from printer friendly mode.

Thanks, Magnum. I've done that, but then you still have to wade through the "Nice armor!" posts anyway. I use several computers (1 at work, 2 or 3 at home, etc.), so this also keeps all the reference material in one central location, here on the 405th. ;) Plus, it's share-able as a blog and also convenient for consolidating information from multiple threads which I've started doing. :D

So your idea to reduce clutter of a large thread on this site is to essentially double its contents a second time on this same site?
