Started an odst helmet today. Mostly for the fun of it but if it comes out right I'm vacuforming it out of high impact plastic. I'm then going to shoot it with my paintball gun ramped up to as high a pressure as I can get it to. If it withstands a lot I might use it on the field. Pictures coming soon.

Normally I wouldn't condone using armor for paintball, but if you're using the right plastic designed to withstand those impacts then ya go for it. Here's hoping everything goes as planned for you =)

I think making a helmet for paintball sound like fun! From my experience with paintball (24 years), I will say be careful with the visor. Using a high impact plastic for the helmet will be more than strong enough. Just make sure that it is at least 3/16 inch thick. Now the visor is very important, taking a shot to the head is no big deal, but if your visor fails you're looking at losing an eye. The goggles that I use have a dual pane polycarbonate lens, I have been shot dead in the face from inches away and not a scratch. So I would recommend trying to fit a set of "goggle lens" into the helmet. You will also want it to seal up around your eyes because shell shrapnel from a paintball can still make it up to your eye. So heck ya, build it, but remember safety first. 300 fps is roughly 280 mph

Thank you all for the advice and support. I'll be testing the helmet at over 300 fps. If it can handle that then I'm golden. Thinking I might have to do a custom visor out of lexan I believe it is. Either that or sink a large visor into it and do a drop down dummy visor that looks authentic. Plus I'll get the "polarization" effect.

image.jpgHere is the left ear and upper jaw. I was going to do it in parts as I won't be able to vacuform it as a whole but I figure I can build the helmet, test the fit and then chop it when I get my vacuuform machine built.

nice,nice... i might take some tips from you

Nothing special. Just some tape for secure meant and to help with folding I use an exacto, rulers and a fine knitting needle. I'm actually the one who needs tips :)

Didn't like some of the finer sections of my helmet, so I started over with a more condensed print. It was 27 now it's 16 pages, minus the visor.image.jpg

I would suggest to test out the plastic resistance first. shooting multi shot on a piece from multiple distance and even close range

That's the plan. Would suck if this failed in the field. Also thinking of hitting it with a hammer to simulate fall damage.

image.jpgAfter connecting many of the pieces into larger groups and removing the flaps, this is the results. It's a little tougher to put together but patience and diligence work out. This is the visor ( which I'm thinking of casting in lexan, (which, if my research is correct, is kinda like a clear HIPS) and the chin piece. Without the flaps it creates smoother joints, and when you use image.jpgthis edge of the blade in the picture to score the stock the folds become much nicer and cleaner. More should be posted within 24 hours. Conquest out.

When the pep is assembled I'll post a how to thread on building a vacuuform table with a vid on construction. After the helmet is cast I'll post a vid on the testing :)

Here we have the collar at the back of the neckimage.jpg
next time I'll be posting the back of the head.

When I put the jaw and neck back together I found it didn't fit me. Fit my fiancé, but not me. So I kept scaling up by 10% until I got the right size. I know have 3 different sizes, 0 is the original 1 is 10% larger than the original and 2 is 20% larger than the original. I'm a size 2.image.jpg Please ignore the mess in the background. Also an update on the original size 0 helmet. Left ear is done. You can see it in the pic

Damn, what?! 27 pages for the helmet!? O_O
The 2.0 helmet looks great so far! :D Keep working on it ^^

Great work so far. Lexan for the visor will work fine for a paintball impact, just try to use 1/4 inch. It might be a pain to vac form, but the strength of it will be worth it.
