Damn, what?! 27 pages for the helmet!? O_O
Yeah, I repotted the layout with a bunch of small pieces the first time. This time I made a few big pieces and manually plotted them.

Great work so far. Lexan for the visor will work fine for a paintball impact, just try to use 1/4 inch. It might be a pain to vac form, but the strength of it will be worth it.
Thank you Hopkins. This kind of info is hard to find as there isn't a lot of paintballer so doing this. They are usually told not to do it because of the risk. I'm also thinking of adding a thinner layer on the inside and laminating it like a car window so it doesn't just shatter. Of course I'll be wearing goggles under it just in case.

Another avid paintballer chiming in here (15 years of slinging paint under my belt). My apologies, but I will be posting on a more discouraging note. Any respectable field will NOT allow a homemade helmet onto the field. No matter how much testing someone does in their garage, there's always that chance that the next paintball to hit it might be the one to go through.

In all honesty, if the refs did allow a homemade helmet on the field and you were on the opposing team, I would walk off the field and sit out until you put a certified mask on. Our sport, although getting a bit better in recent years, still has a reputation among non players as being unsafe. Someone losing their eyesight over wearing a cool looking homemade helmet wouldn't help that.

Sorry to be a naysayer, but those are just my own thoughts on the subject, coming from a very experienced paintball background.

thought of that which is why after extensive testing I'm going to see about getting it certified. That's honestly where it's going to get difficult, finding where to certify it.

This is an old link, but it might get you on the right path! Expect to pay in the thousands to get it certified though. I recall a wicked looking mask called angel eyez(I think) a few years back that had tens of thousands of dollars dumped into it, but it never passed the certification process, and therefore never hit the market and was not allowed to be used at fields.

Thank you. This will help a lot. Hopefully it won't cost too much in the long run. Not planning on making this a for sale thing, just a few for me and my friends

No worries man. Just a heads up though, I don't think it will be much (if at all) cheaper to certify a small number of masks.
This is purely assumption:
I assume when certifying a mask, the company doing the testing will require a certain sample size of your finalized product. Testing a prototype or small run of one-off helmets does nothing to show that your production methods are consistent, and therefore the safety of each helmet is identical.

Sounds like a safe assumption to me :). I could do a much larger run for the people of the 405th but I can't see this becoming more than that. It would be great to get licensing to produce replica helmets for paintball for 343 and Microsoft though the process of doing so would probably take forever. Plus they won't be cheap in the long run as I believe the plastic needed cost like $50 or so per square foot, not including the lexan. But assuming everything goes great these would be great helmets and eventually armor (which is next.) speaking of armor, I need a little sizing help. I don't know whether or not to size the armor to the same scale as the helmet or scale it op from original like I did with the helmet. And advice?

New update. Bottom half is done image.jpgworking on the top and then the visor trim. Then I start my size 2 work

Bottom half of the lid looks good!

As for scaling, each file will be a little bit different, so it's good to scale each armor part individually!

Looking great. Did you test fit to make sure it slides on easy. I did one and oh boy.....rather tight and hard to get over the big ears of mine. lol. But over all love it.

No. It's sized for my fiancé and she's at work now. I'll have to test it tomorrow

FlyinPhill is very right about the certification issue. Any well run field will not allow you to use them for safety reasons. But like I said earlier in this post, build a set of paintball goggles into the helmet behind the visor, take it your field and show them what you have to see if they are ok with it. I have several friends who are woods ballers that have added all kinds of stuff to their goggles and they don't have any issues with the fields. Heck there is a video on utube here a bunch of guys dressed up like stormtroopers and put the helmet right over the top of their goggles and went out and played. Just keep with the high impact plastic idea, don't use fiber glass. It may be strong, but it will break into sharp shreds.

Buy keep up the good work. It's looking great!

I've been considering getting save face goggles that are not built into the mask and wearing it under the helmet. Hopefully this all will work with my prescription glasses

http://www.savephace.com/Tactical/Grunt-Series/Grunt these should work with almost any helmet with little to no modification to helmet padding and no modification to helmet.

I actually never wanted to use fiberglass, always seemed too much of a hassle. Always wanted plastic of some kind. I'm actually hoping to do my tests at my local field so the ammo will be consistent.

http://www.amazon.com/Airsoft-Half-Face-Mask-Green/dp/B004RD89TU considering mounting this into the helmet as well for a little lower face protection in case it does break on the field. Back of the head will be fine as there will be more padding than in the face. In addition if the mask breaks I can keep playing and just rip off the shards, leaving behind the goggles and half mask behind.

Yes those will work perfect. And wear contacts:)
I actually want to get contacts for paintball. Only problem is I've never been able to get a pair in :p
