You're fine if you fiberglass over (or preferably under) the cardboard. Remember to wear proper protection when using resins. If you use cardboard only, then whatever you make will form a lot of cracks.

If you put it on to thick it will warp your cardboard. I would paint a thin layer of fiberglass on and let harden, then you can coat again to make it thicker and harder without the worry of warping as much.
