I have often wondered the same thing. People say armorsmith is the way to go. It's a program where you plug in your body measurements and it makes a to-scale 3d mannequin of you that you can scale the models to. I have yet to figure out how to export the scaled files for 3d printing however...
Armorsmith is 35(?) Dollars but in my opinion it's totally worth it if your making a suit. A small price to pay to bypass a lot of scaling headache.
