The "noob"

Well, I think it was in the noob forum it was being discussed, but it probably should be over here if anything.

(And P.S. I did search for the other topic)

I've def. noticed a decrease in spam posts in the noob forum, maybe I'm just not looking at the topics I don't want to but yeah.

But what I have noticed, was that everyone who has lurked on this forum, generally tends to be a better..forumer.

I know the whole noob forum is used how it should, but people obviously need to read more, and obviously, we can't force them to read the stickies.

Idea: Maybe giving them no access to posting at all until a set amount of time, like 2 weeks or something. Just so that they HOPEFULLY can get "bored" and look around, or maybe if they actually do care about building armor, they'll research first.

Now obviously theres problems, because noobs (sorry to steriotype) around the age of under 16 [not all noobs are young] are going to be impatient and want to learn right away, so the mods will have inboxes full of "WAI CANT EYE POAST"

I'm not sure how doable it is, but if they try to post there should be a popup/notification/however you wanna do it, that explains how they have to wait until X time from registering. And then give a happy little video or powerpoint(flash) or message telling them to read stickies and informing them of pepakura and everything else.

Doesn't mean it will stop all the noobs but it will hopefully filter some to stop posting, "WHAT DO I NEED TO GET TO MAKE ARMOR" etc.

Now you can all disagree with me.

I think this might be workable... but with some tweeks. Maybe make it so they cannot access the forums until they pass a relatively easy test/quiz made up from some of the stickies.

Well, that was my other idea in the other forum, and I know that this idea needs a lot of work.

But my original idea was to have them message the mods and just like tell them an explanation of why they want to be on it. Obviously how they present themselves is going to be a major piece of information. I.E. bad grammar and spelling.

If there was a time limit then people could just leave the forum and come back in 2 weeks or however long it would be.

We have 6 or 7 mods currently. They are all busting their asses to get this charter down. Most of the time their inboxes are full all the time. there could just be an online quiz that they have to take, they can only take it once a week. they put in their user name and then a mod can review the people who pass, then give them access.

Pepakura is a... Wrong Answer: Style of modeling

The correct answer was a "3D-2D Program"

you dont model in pepakura.

What do you guys think of my idea? to allow access to post, or to post outside of the noob area they have to pass something like this.

Well... that explains the confusion... because while you may not model in Pepakura, you can model with Pepakura... its what you have when you're done. ;)

And the quiz would help a little bit... until someone posted the answers for it somewhere.... but maybe at least by having to input the correct answers they might learn something along the way, even if they didn't find the answers themselves.

Woot!... now I am on the scoreboard twice... yes!!

do you honestly think that someone would start another forums about getting into the 405th via a quiz, instead of reading a few stickies.

Well... I have seen people do a lot more silly things in my life. Case and point... Right now, someone is selling a cornflake that looks like Illinois on eBay for several $1000.... people do ridiculous things all the time. And I actually meant someone sends them the answers or posts them on this board and they get looked over.... but then again, your right, nothing gets past the scrutinizing eyes of the 100 kids that read this board everyday, so that would never work.

Yea, i dont think something like that would happen, but an relativley easy test (such as this one) to atleast prove that they know or have read some of the forum.

last time i head (yesterday) it was only at $20

Wow, I just heard about the cornflake today, didn't think it was that popular.

Current bid: US $200,444.00

And I actually enjoyed that quiz, some of it I didn't even know, like the slush thingymajig and other random things. Yet I got an 80.

Maybe for access on the pepakura thread a seperate quiz should be there.

Or a more lengthy quiz, like, what is a mountain fold and valley fold. What tool is not necessary for building pep armor. Basically just so it can get the stickies across in the quiz.

Alright I know I'm like super new here so I hope I'm not out of place by speaking up about this subject ... but I think I have a unique perspective on this. On this forum I'm a newbie, this is my 3rd post I believe. But I moderate for another forum, and have one of my own (the forum I mod for has around 70K posts, almost 9K of those are mine, my forum is only a few months old and we have about 350 members and 7500 posts)(and both forums use IPB like this one, another reason I like this place) so I know what it's like to try and build an online community. Anyway, I think making new members go into a waiting period after joining would drive away a lot of potential valued members. From my very brief time here I would think that enforcing something like that would create an almost unwelcoming atmosphere. I do agree with 117x that lurkers do tend to end up being more productive members. I know I lurked here for a few weeks trying to get a feel if this forum was right for me. I know if I had joined and received a message that I had to go in time out for a few weeks because I might annoy the veteran members with redundant threads or whatever I most certainly wouldn't have come back to post and try to contribute. I'm going to be punished for something I didn't even do? Boards that have an elitist attitude don't appeal to a lot of people. And whether that was the case or not I guarantee that is the impression I would have gotten, and most new members would likely feel that way too. Just my 2 cents, adjusted for inflation too.

Silicon is ... Wrong Answer: What Shells are made out of

========================================

Silicon is used to make the mold, the shell is made out of a much harder substance and is used to keep the silicone in place the pull is being made.

Yeah, the idea is ok, but not everyone knows that much about mold-making and if you search for "sl*sh casting" on the forums, you get nothing (however, slushcast will find two three posts now)

the questions on major members of the 405th is a good idea though

I understand where you guys are coming from with the frustration of having people just come on the forum post an already answered question and expect another walk-through made for them.

When I first joined this forum I spent a few weeks just reading the rules stickies then just browsed through the creation stickies and tried to learn a little to get started up.

I don't think that a time limit will produce the results you want. I think that the quiz would be good idea but in a better implementation. I looked at the quiz that was posted I knew some of it but I don't think that I could have passed. My idea is this: make quizes that cover each topic to allow a person to post in certain topics. I have read mostly on pepakura and fiberglass, so I really don't know about pulling molds and slushmold and silicon ect. but that's because I haven't got to that advanced level yet and haven't seen the need to read those stickies. When I get to that level I will be researching it but should that mean that I shouldn't be able to make post? Just because I haven't researched processes above my level. So maybe you pass a quiz you get to post in the related creation style forum.

I don't know what you can do for the noob forum though because it is a place for noobs so... it's hard to have a place for new people to congregate but at the same time restrict them from being noobs.

That is just my opinion

PS: I don't see how major members of the forum is relevant to creation or discussion about creation. If it's about respect people shoud treat everyone with the same amount or they shouldn't be posting and if it's about needing help from a mod people can find that and need not be quized on it as a requirement to post. I guess I just don't see how it's important.

Its about the entire 405th, i made that quiz off the top of my head. I have never molded or slushcasted or any of that. but i am a part of the 405th, and so is that. molding is a major part of the 405th, and even if your doing pep, you should know about it.

It is also important to know who moderates the forums. I've had people think i was a mod, just because they havent researched.
