Hey dudes,...

i searched the forum and found some stuff around pepping, folding, molding, resin, bondo-ing whats so ever...
but onlys 2 threads with clear information about painting the armor after the resin layer and possible the body filler.

ive tested a trash piece today and i dont think that my chosen color is the best...
here the result.

here in germany i have some problems to find the correct products for example bondo...
i used other resin, other paper and so on...

after resin the pep file, i painted it to see the result.
the painting technique is get carried away, but this is only a test.
i used graffiti colors from the shop next-door. but as you can see on the picture, the color seems to be on-hook and shiny. after some hours of drying (graffiti colors dry fast) it looks like oil-paint... this isnt the perfect result but this was cheap (only 4 bugs (€) for one can)

by the way the color looks 'boring'... is there a technique of mixing multiple colors for the basecolor?

important is, that i dont used body filler on this piece... i think you should noticed that, because i dont really know what kind of material soaks the color.

what is the perfect color to get results like this?
what kind of color i need (varnish, oil color,...? is graffiti paint so bad?)

pls help me :D i want a good quality for my odst armor
greetings

well if you want quality paint for your armor you're gonna need to spend money on it. usually paints from krylon and duplicolor are good for these projects (im not sure if germany has it).

also to get a good finish, you need to sand a lot with high grit sandpaper. make sure you use a primer so that the color lays on like it should.

btw, theres really no way to mix paint unless you go to a paint store and have them do it for you. i know in the US you can go to a car paint place that mixes it for you and even puts it in a spray can if you'd like,

thanks for the reply, the name of the colors are good, but if i move in the store and ask for them, they dont really know what i meen...
what typ of color do i need?
oil-color, waterbased...?

is car varnish advisable?

if i have the typ of the ne color, i have a chance to get the same quality with a german product.
should i sand everytime for the best painting or only to smooth the armor? when its nessessary for the paint, i test it tomorrow... suffices to sand the top surface or should i sand more than the top layer? my resin layer isnt so thick.

where can i usually get the correct paint? i dont have any wallmart... only home-improvement market and stuff like that

I buy all my paints at the hardware store (or home-improvement market as you said). Spray enamel is best (in my experience), car varnish is a close second (and the best option if you're looking for metallics), although it can have some issues with sticking to even the primer. Make sure you ARE using primer, also. Car spray primer is my favorite, in whatever color you prefer.

if you want a smooth surface you're gonna need to sand in between coats. if you're not gonna sand between colors at least sand between your coats of primer (i do about 2 coats). try laying down a layer of primer and after it dries, run your hand across it. you'll feel lots of specks and small bumps.

i learned how to paint through the same process as you would paint a car.

do you mean i should use a color primar under my main finish color?
hmm... i thought i should use a color which uses AS a primar... not really a primar...
okay, tomorrow i went to the store and looking for some spray enamel.

btw i read an ariticle on the web... they said that its necessaryto sand every layer of the paint... also the final layer?
should i use any color protector or something like that, after the finish layer?

thanks dude... i reply tomorrow again if this was helpfull ;)

btw

does anybody know what kind of color sean bradley for his Child's Play Auction Custom Odst Helmet used?

the quality of the color seems to be perfect.

If it's the same color he used on the rest of his ODST stuff, it's Dupli-Color Gunmetal Metallic. I've used it on my ODST helmet, it looks fantastic. I've had a hard time finding it locally, even here in the US though.

Another good point to make, having experience with automotive painting. During your prep work you want to make sure the finish is smooth as glass (wet sanding with 800-1000 grit or higher works well) then go over the whole thing with a RED sctrach pad, like a scotch brite bad you'd use on pots and pans, but made for paint prepping. another idea is to use a self etching primer as a base coat, it has an acid additive that does the etching for you, you wan't every nook and cranny to give the paint something to stick too (mechanical bond) put paint on in this layers (first coat should be almost transparent) first few coats can be applied without sanding, but you want to weetsand again before the final coat (don't forget the scratch pad before the last coat) then clear coat, you can wet sand the clear once it's completly dry with 2000 grit paper, then buff it and should be good to go. I understand you said you are from Germany and I am not sure what you have for resources there, I know that here you can pick up just about everything you need between Wal-Mart (don't know what you equivelant would be) or an automotive store. If you take your time and pay attention to detail, you really don't need over the top fancy expensive stuff. You can make rattle can look profesional.

One thing I did forget to add was make sure you keep everything clean, a small bottle of surface cleaner does well. Don't use acetone or anything stronger than laquer thinner because it will take all you hard work away. If you can find a Tack Cloth use that after sanding (it's kinda like chesse cloth, only sticky)

A good recource for finding all things related to paint http://www.eastwood.com/

I tested an other spray color...
the effect is better, but not the right.

tomorrow i drive to a reseller of dupli-color and try to get the "gunmetal metallic"... but there is a question. dupli color have diffrent categories.
in which one is the gunmetal metallic listed? i cant find the color in there online-portal

this is the site of dupli color in america ...category is metallic
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metallic.html

or where can i find it? i need it, because i dont really know what the german name of dupli color gunmetal metallic is

this is the type that is most common in the auto stores i go to:
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/autospray.html

its called "touch-up spray" because its meant to fix small scratches on your car. theyre also in smaller cans so you need to buy more.

there is an other question ...
how can i add "bullet" damages to my armor? sean bradley add some to his helmet
here is a pic ...
IMG_0654.jpg

the damages are on top of the helmet... what is the painting technique to get those damages...
the scratches on the edges are easy, but this..
