Grunt Build

I follow you Chitwood. I picked up some pvc and tried a couple of configurations for the arm extensions. My biggest concern is to keep the weight down. I have some frames built that I think will work. I'll get some pictures up after I get the fingers on there so you can see the sizes.

Mitch - My other daughter does facepainting so I'm hoping we can get a really good look from her. I notice you are in Springfield Ohio. That's about an hour away so there's no danger of us trick or treating there and getting Joanna shot. Of course I'll be chasing her around in my MC armor :) On the other hand, are you planning on having any armor out for next Halloween? I'd drive an hour for us to go out together.

The grunt pep file seems to be working out fine. I calculated a ratio off the screen for arm pit to full width and used Joanna's arm pit to get a width. The front of the piece has a few simple large pieces to build a test so we whipped it up and the first was a little bit close. Used a little more generous measurement on her and then we were OK. I thought the helmet might need a different scale, but there isn't much to it and I think it will fit.

Did some more work on the arm extensions. These are looking OK, but the way they are now, I don't think the fingers will handle adding articulation. But I have a few other ideas. This shows the size and shape.

The dowel is for the thumb, then the fingers will be wrapped around another dowel that connect to the fingers for closing the whole hand.

I also fitted the head lamp just to see how that will look. More pics to come.

I reply to a reply two days later... Man I need to go to the forums more then I do. If I have my Naval Pilot suit ready by then I might but I doubt my parents would be ok with me going with someone they never met, but that's normal. The hands look really good as well, very grunt like.

Hey Mitch - I tend to forget what an age disparity there can be on a forum. Your parents being leery of you meeting up with some guy you met on the interwebs is a good thing. I don't suppose you would want to be seen hanging around with some 52 yr old guy with 2 kids anyway! (Even if his kid was wearing a grunt costume). Thanks for the comments on the build.

Well there are two people older then me in my group. It's called Halo Buckeye Corps, 405th members located in Ohio. One is younger, and the others I haven't talked to so I wouldn't know for those. Any other 52 year old I really wouldn't want to but 405th members are different, it's as if they have magical bonds like hunters. When one is killed the other is enraged, I forgot where I was going with this.

I'm still thinking about that. I was planning to have Bonnie (my wife) make it out of material with an elastic band at the elbow and a big velcro seam on the inside. Stuff the whole thing with some kind of poly filler. The lightest stuff I could find.

Kudose (???) on having a supportive family. Now the only thing missing are the grunt's weaponry. But I can't help but think that's so mean. Having your daughter dressed up as a grunt; the cannon fodder of the game. Oh well, could of been worse. Could of been a six year old. They're short enough. lol. (SMACK!)

Actually it was her idea. She's read the books and thought it would be fun to be Yayyap. Once we found the Pep files and actually got them to fit her, it started to look like ever more interesting costume work.

I wonder how they would take it in the local mall if a grunt went running by followed by the Master Chief?........ :)

A little progress:

No thighs for this one. That might be a comment I made about my Mk VI. There are little pieces that go along the waist. My other daughter might be up for a marine costume. I have a lot to do!

One thing I'm wondering about is what are you going to do for the parts of the costume that you don't build? I can immagen grey makeup on all her exposed skin, but What are you going to do for her stomach and legs?

Prob'ly just a close fitting top and bottom. The lower leg will be stuffed like the forearm to make the oversized leg. there are some upper arm bands to make. I think I can make those out of wristbands. So the only exposed skin will be her face and neck.

Jeff! This is really neat! I totally missed this, but I'm loving your work! I can't wait to see more, and you have one lucky daughter!

so, how exactly did you make the arm extention move the right way, like not to the outside but inside?

Do you have some blueprint for it, or can you show me a picture?

I have some sketches, but it is mostly eyeball engineering and scaled to fit Joanna. It moves to the inside because the tubing is cut away on the inside. If you look closely at the extended fingers pic you'll see. Also check out this video on youtube. That's where I got the basic idea.
