Why not both?

After all, modern rifles like the AUG, M4, and G3 all have flash suppressors that screw on to the end of the barrel, so you could try to get a similar thing going here.

I'd say flash suppressor.

My vote is do both. Modular design isn't that hard to accomplish and adds at least 25% to the cool factor of a prop, and big thumbs up for the work done already, kinda totally missed out on this till today !

And to add to this : the weak part of a prop is nearly always the barrel. So making that one exchangable isn't just a gimmick, it's thinking ahead.
