A Computer Virus You Should Be Worried About.

Conficker. A blend of the words 'Configuration' and 'F****r'. Basically put, your configurations are f****d.

From CNN:
"(CNN) -- A computer-science detective story is playing out on the Internet as security experts try to hunt down a worm called Conficker C and prevent it from damaging millions of computers on April Fool's Day.

The anti-worm researchers have banded together in a group they call the Conficker Cabal. Members are searching for the malicious software program's author and for ways to do damage control if he or she can't be stopped.

They're motivated in part by a $250,000 bounty from Microsoft and also by what seems to be a sort of Dick Tracy ethic. "We love catching bad guys," said Alvin Estevez, CEO of Enigma Software Group, which is one of many companies trying to crack Conficker. "We're like former hackers who like to catch other hackers. To us, we get almost a feather in our cap to be able to knock out that worm. We slap each other five when we're killing those infections. The malicious program already is thought to have infected between 5 million and 10 million computers.

Those infections haven't spawned many symptoms, but on April 1 a master computer is scheduled to gain control of these zombie machines, said Don DeBolt, director of threat research for CA, a New York-based IT and software company. What happens on April Fool's Day is anyone's guess."

There is a ton of info on this bad boy available, but since most of you won't click on a link that I provide, I'm not going to provide any. Do your due diligence on this one folks. It's serious and carries the capacity to do more damage than the Slammer virus of five years ago.

Those of you that believe Snopes is the end all of authenticity do your search there. Others, use whatever search engine you like.

Update your AV software, download and install all of the available patches, updates and service packs for whatever Windows OS you are running, and hang on.

If Conficker C is set to trigger a system already hosting Conficker B at a certain time on a certain date, it will. If that system is powered down prior to the trigger time the trigger will launch as soon as that system is powered back up.

If your system is unprotected or only mildly protected and far behind in security updates then that system is vulnerable to this sort of attack.

When Slammer hit some years back there were a lot of companies that found themselves needing to flatten and reload a lot of systems. Not to pound on my own chest, but not one of our regular clients were affected. I don't expect that any of our clients will be affected by this one either.

But a lot of the humans here seem to get their fair share of viruses and malware, on a pretty regular basis. Most of you are not on supported, protected corporate networks so I thought I would bring this info up.

I'm not trying to say that the sky is falling or that nukes are in flight heading for a town near you, but it seemed sensible to try and give my 'other' family a heads up.

Hell, even if you do end up being affected by this, you probably won't even notice. Might be a few new 'options' when you connect a USB thumb drive to your computer, or go to your favorite P2P site, but it's not likely that your system will crash or all of the data will disappear. No money in that for the hackers.

It's going to get bumpy.

Best regards,
Mike

As head of IT operations these things make us loose sleep. Even if it was or is harmless no one knows for sure. Worst of all is that it was wide spread, and has been in the wild for a while. To top that off it was updated regularly and changed. That is some scarry stuff. Oh dear, my geekness is showing lol....

Come on! This is a family site! Don't be showing your geekness like that. Haha but in all seriousness, from personal experience, viruses can be a B word to deal with. You never want to get caught in one of those situations. I'm being extra carefull for a while until the all clear is sounded.

But yeah haha like Nugget said, it's going to be released on APRIL THE FIRST (1) so, im not gona be surprized if it is just a joke, but even if, im still unplugging my computer completely the night before and not touching it for a while... lol
Will this effect consoles if it is real? (My 360!!?? it could die!!!)

I find that it'd be ironic if all the virus did was open a popup that says, "April Fool's!"

That would be the Boza, the first virus for Windows 95: every 30 days it would say occasionally "The taste of fame just got tastier! VLAD Australia does it again with the world's first Win95 virus." and would just corrupt 32 bit programs (many people who just get a 95 would load their old 16 bit programs on it, making the boza more of an annoyance with its message)

delta38, I don't think you should really worry about your console, what would a hacker gain from taking over consoles? Nothing.

You really think I'd spend all that time typing that out as a joke? I'm alerting my second family here people!

If you turn your PC off before April 1st, and plan on turning it on April 2nd, its still going to get you if you have it. Because if its set to activate on the 1st, and your turn it on on the 2nd, it will just activate then.

Best regards,
Mike

The news of this worm are all over the internet. Its actually a worm and not a virus because of its nature of evading detection. Its been said that it can easily transfer itself in the command file of ANY usb drive. The only way to have a chance of keeping an infected usb thung drive from infecting a computer is to disable the auto activate feature built into the computer. In all liklihood, many public computer lab computers are already infected, and people use usb drives regularly to transfer files to and from those computers...

The worm was 1st detected because most likely the system clock was set ahead. The worm is no joke, its nasty and could easily destroy all information on your computer... but since the nature of this threat hasn't been discovered since it takes its divine orders off of the internet one can only hope it doesn't take its orders from Skynet... (Terminator...)

If you are worried turn back your system clock on your computer and disable your computers ability to auto sync the clock. This way you can buy yourself a few weeks or so and with any luck the worm will no longer be morphing itself to avoid tracking, thus making it possible to have antivirus get rid of it.

The worm downloads operating info off of the internet, that's how it is updated and made untrackable. Disconnecting a computer from the internet is the only way to keep the worm from morphing, but that also prevents you from updating your antivirus as well...

Thank God for new systems that I just built and also thank God for McAfee. :p

(Microsoft released a patch for this virus, and after installing XP I downloaded every update so far. My advice, everyone else do the same, as well as doing an on-demand scan with AVG or McAfee on April 1st).

EDIT: That would be funny as hell if it was just a pop-up that opens and says "APRIL FOOL'S!" then automatically deletes itself, though I doubt that's the case.

I hope that its not like stormbreaker.

Its roumered to be worse than the Slammer virus a few years back. This worm has already infected 9 Million computers too. Just keep yourself safe on what and where you go in the interwebz. Stay off scratchy sites. Don't download files off filesharing sites. And a big, big no-no...Stay away from those nasty porn sites, they are like feeding grounds for viruses.

Best regards,
Mike

I've also read that a lot of professionals are saying that it's going to end up being nothing big. But, with everything, there are going to be those that prepare for the worse as well.

I think you're gonna need more than that.

Yeah, me too, or at least let's hope they stop it before it's supposed to trigger itself. Microsoft apparently already released patches that fixes the security holes it was using, but the programmers of this virus probably could easily get around it.
