OK I seem to be having a lot of fun with some items that could greatly help the people that build the Star Wars, Warhammer and Halo things but I am stuck on trying to convert these files to something that I can import into Designer. Below is a image of the file types in one of the folders if someone could tell me what I need to do to get a .OBJ or. 3DS out of this I would appreciate it somebody in the past converted a .mdl for me by using a .mdl decompiler and importing it into a program that would understand a .smd and exporting as a .obj . So here is the image below of one of the characters I am trying to convert if anyone wants to help please let me know.

I am just needing help converting the .MDL files that I have if the .VTX is the image file I really don't need that since just about everyone paints the pepakura stuff themselves and textures really don't matter. The file you see in the picture on the top left is the .MDL file. So the members here know what kind of files I have found things like Tau Commander, War Machine, Dark Void, Clonetroopers, you name it I have it but without a way to convert the file I have no way to work with it in pep.

Just did some searching around, looks like Milkshape 3d is a program that will open mdl files.

The program does have a trial download but I can't tell what features are missing from it, probably the ability to save files. A quick search on this site and I found that dungbeetle models with milkshape, so he might be able to help you out.

First thiing I tried using was Milkshape after doing some searching the only two bad things are that I could'nt get the .MDL to import and the trial version does'nt save. However I will try to contact Dungbeetle to see if he has any ideas.

I'd prefer to see people move away from ripping and instead purpose build models for pep but...

Try Crafty, MDL's are a pain to deal with (one good reason to avoid them ;) ) but it's worked with a few different types for me.

The .mdl file is a half-life model, I used to make player models for Day Of Defeat, a half-life mod. You need to decompile it in milkshape and then import the.smd file.

From there you can edit the mesh or export it as an .obj file.

That worked perfect Belakor thanks for the help. Now I can get to some of these files I have some are ugly poly looking but some are also pretty high poly as well and well detailed.

I happen to hate MDLs. Flight Sim X uses them and they just suck. I was trying to edit one of my planes, once, to change a few design aspects, and I went to look for it. .mdl. I hate seeing that. Nothing really opens it, and it's not a particularly good way to store a 3D object. Great encryption though: No one has software to open it! :lol

I know something about MDL extension. It's Half-life 2 model file. I usually extract it to 3ds max for remodeling.

If you want to extract it. You will have a MDL Decompiler, Source SDK and SMD importer for 3ds max or Maya. You can download MDL decompiler from Here. But, Source SDK. You must find it somewhere in hl2 mod forum.

If you can't do it. Give you files to me. I will extract for you.

If you download hl2 mod model file from some where. You must have a permission from artist before edit and cut artist's file.

Or, you can download Source SDK from Steam for free, if I remember correctly...

Anyway, I've never had success decompiling MDLs, and I don't know why. It's tricky business.
