So with Ohayocon coming up I thought I should get started on a costume.

I haven't built a full costume before so I thought it's probably time to get crackin!

I always loved Dead Space and considering that this year's theme at Ohayocon is zombie smashin', I thought who better for the job than Isaac Clarke!

Here is what I've got done so far.

Current State:

Progress:

Start of the chest piece.

Used some reference images and 3D files I found around the net.

Thanks for looking and STAY POSTED for progress! :D

Woo! More Dead Space! =D Looks good for cardboard! Are you using any type of templates or are you doing it by eye?

Very cool Lunex! I havent seen a full dead space carboard build before and yours is lookin awesome! Keep up the good work! Dead Space all the way!!! :D

Yea I've just been eyeing the build. Hopefully I"ll have a wearable chest piece by the end of the week :3

Oh and thank you! Appreciate the support!

sure it aint perfect but that looks really decent. the lighting is great and the colors match near perfect. I would suggest using something like bondo so smooth out those edges on the helmet so it doesn't look too cardboard-ish

I tried using bondo on some of the areas but soon realized that considering my time frame, it's better that I just do my best with pure cardboard. It'll be fun anyway to see what I can do with cardboard and nothing else :p Thanks for the tip though.
Got a good start on the chest today and hopefully I can post some more pics tomorrow.

UPDATE!

Got the back piece underway.

The project (minus helmet) in all its progress :)

Should get a good bit done today! Stay posted

Awesome cardboard work to the life meter on the back of the rig! Consider me subscribed dude, keep up the good work!

Me gusta. Mucho bueno. The cardboard and paint really work together to make this build look good.

UPDATE (12/12/12) :$

Got the back about 95% done.
Working on the chest now.

Fancy pics commence.

Stay frosty! :)

I am probably going to find a frosted piece of tube of some sort and fill it with the same LED strip that I got for the helmet.

I'll shove a few of them in the stasis meter too.

Already have the chest well underway :D

Sorry for lack of updates recently. Visiting parents for Christmas so I haven't had the chance to work on the costume too much.

The chest is pretty much finished though!

I'll get pics up when I get the chance.
Next order of business once Christmas passes is hitting the gauntlets. From there I'll do shoulders and then work down to the legs.

Peace,
Tyler

First, awesome build. Your cardboard work is really impressive. In an earlier post you said that you had tried Bondo, but that it didn't really work out. I've been down this road. If you decide to try a filler again, you'll need a flexible filler that won't crack when the cardboard flexes. I used a craft sculpting product that was a mix of paper pulp and clay. Not sure if something like that is available where you are, but vinyl wall spackle might be.

On a separate note, I did a couple of things to my armor that helped its longevity. See if you can find to surplus oil-based building paint. It smells awful, but you need the oil paint rather than acrylic or latex. Those are water based and will dissolve the glue inside the cardboard corrugations. Anyway, paint your costume parts inside and out with the oil paint. The paint waterproofs your parts and soaks into the fibers, stiffening the parts significantly.

One other trick I learned with cardboard. After bending a piece of cardboard (hopefully without kinking), wipe both sides with a damp (not wet!) cloth. This soaks in, temporarily loosening the glue in the corrugations, allowing the sides and corrugations to move slightly to accommodate the new shape before drying in the new position.

Hope you find at least some of that useful.

So.... A scratch build..... LOVE IT! I really enjoy watching these builds come together. Hope you find enought time and funds to complete it. What you have already is just do awesome. Keep it up and keep the updates comin. We shall be lurking....

Thanks for the comments guys!
It really encourages me to continue working.

I was wanting to seal the suit after its finished. I'll have to look into that Redshirt. Thanks
I was planning on spraying it with a spray paint clear coat but it seems that it'll probably crack with wear.
I'm looking forward to the holidays but even more so after when I can work on this again! >:D

Cheers and have a Merry Christmas everyone!

UPDATE

Hey everyone. Got back the the building and just finished up the chestpiece.

Here is what she looks like all done except for a few little nic-nacks.

Working on the gauntlets and legs now.
Its a pain because I'm a little skinny guy so fitment is going to be tricky without getting out of proportion :(

Later and stay posted as I'm going to knock out as much as possible in the next week or week and a half.

Im skinny too mate lol. I can offer an idea though. Make the legs and arms and all that a bit bigger and line your cardboard with some foam. Same as from a foam build should be light enough. At least it should look in proportion and still fit properly.
