Crazy ideas for hud

I've got some ideas as well, this link was posted to another thread about ski goggles that have something like a HUD but they cost a pretty penny. https://www.zealoptics.com/transcend/

These are a small screen embedded in the edge of the goggle frame. You look down to view it.

In fact, I was thinking of a similar idea with the Active-i glasses that I recently got a couple pairs of on sale at a super cheap price. Initially I thought of them as just a cool set of glasses with a working screen for a UNSC trooper. The really interesting part about them is that they have a detachable LCD screen so, if you get the right cable, rather than wearing the glasses with the LCD attached, you could embed a screen(or two) below/above the visor and put the electronics somewhere else in the helmet.

The proper lens is right there so you can view it an inch or two away from your eye.

that would be awesome, the only things to solve now would be to solve the installation and power issue, and the programming, to something that you could use while in the helmet. you could technically just install the camera in the goggles and use it as a helmet cam for cons and such. Master chief cam.

Update to realistic uses

alright, i wont use quotes for my responses, because itll take quite a while. so looking on google, i came across a "hack" for a kids toy- beleive its called spy gear or something like that. its one screen for one eye; pretty much what you guys showed but a hell of allot cheaper. i found one for $30! that includes a car with a camera on it, the eye unit, and a controller. now i was up to getting those ski goggles, but apparently, the HUD is displayed on the bottom right of the goggles, which sounds quite unrealistic and the price is waaayyy to hefty for what you get.

so ive narrowed down what ideas i am going to test that sound realistic:

the UV lighting idea- ive done some photoshopping that accords to the close range such as the visor, giving each view a different tint. one red one cyan. on the screen it works fine, ill upload a photo later when i get a new monitor (mine is messed, green shows up purple :/)

the spy gear idea- i can use the provided camera for showing reactions of people, and its surprisingly affordable.

video glasses- ever heard of myvus? they are portable video viewing glasses. i found a cheap version for $50, and a VOD (a live video overlay device) for about $30.

my guess- most likely the spy gear. its cheap, the depth of field is excellent, and it runs efficiently. remember, i will test ALL of the ideas above, and ill let you guys be the judge of the best.

thanks for the intrest guys!

photoshopped

hey srry for the dp, but i finished my refined version of the visor. i needed to make transparency to make the 3d effect better. heres a screeny from photoshop:

if you guys want the file, ill be sure to share with you all! feel free to tell me if im missing anything in my HUD

i have a friend who does huds, but he uses stickers. this would be a good idea if it glowed and whatnot with regular light, inside a helmet most visors are made to shade the sun.

hey everyone, i dont know of you know this, but if you use a dremel to score the surface of clear plexi, and put an led pointing directly in the edge of the glass, from the bottom, top, or sides (the thinner part) the light will show where the plexi is frosted or scored. it will not show up in the glass except for a faint glow where the led is, but that area that is lower from the its a custom light fixture trick, and how they light up designs like in the monster cases at carls jr.

im not sure if this was mentioned or not. if anyones unclear ill draw up a diagram, or just post an exapmle real quick

I will second cinderblock's idea. I have a slipknot bar sign that has been CNC'd with a blue led shining down through the side, I'll post a pick if you guys want to see it, I think that is prob the easyest idea, although the LCD display sounds awesome!

I like the idea of the LED on the side and the scoring and if you really want to go all out, which if your doing this you might as well go all the way, you could use a red and a blue LED and have someone make a chip that controls the LEDs which is in another thread somewhere, and have the red LED flash every once in a while to mimic the shield drop.

Scoring and LEDs

some photos would be nice, not just so i can explore my options, but so everyone can see what it looks like. thanks

I just realised you need to put pics on a website to insert them here (NOOB!)

here is the sign I was talking about

the design has been scored into the back, reverse, so it looks right and smooth from the front, the HUD design could be done easily the same way.

The only thing I would be concerned about with this is the light being visible from outside of the helmet, I.E. shining through the mirrored visor. I suppose it could work if the LEDs were dimmed enough, but that might diminish the effect.

if it works it would totally worth it. it would really look amazing. And then we would just have to wait for technology to catch up to fantasy so we can have an actual HUD. I give it 5 years if that.

The light showing throught the dark visor would be negligable unless the room you were in was dark, then like stated you could simply run a dimmer switch somewhere and adjust accordingly. Its cheap and pretty lol

I know there is some LED strips you can get down here, there is about 6 LEDs per strip, and they come with a dimmer! but i was working for a sign mob when I saw them so im not sure where to get them, might have to start researching.....

LEDs

try looking at barlighting.com. they have strips of leds there at decent prices. i like the design of the one in the picture, however it seems very hard to accomplish, and quite risky. i think a single eye personal media viewer like the spy gear one i was talking about would be the best bet. its black and white, but just put in a clear dyed acrylic blue sheet into it. ill give you guys the link to the hack soon

Hmmmmmmmm.....

EPIC IDEA!!!!!!!!!!! ok its the first if its kind so there are gonna be some major hiccups but OH WELL

Good luck, and dont let it get you down, or you'll never succeed :D

amazing, it looks like 3d-hologram (maybe an idea for a cortana that comes out a chip (that holds an led) :p)

to acheave the look your going to need either a very steady hand, or a router with a really small bit. Like you said, the mini LCD screen may be the best option.

I have actually seen a Cortana bar sign like my one, with a purple LED, was a choice between this one or Cortana........kinda obvious my choice lol, might have to go back and look for it!
