Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Looking good. And I'm digging the silver accents (weathering and from the looks of it, stripes) against the dark blue. If it were mine, I'd be tempted to do the back section in black. I tend to favor the black/blue/silver color scheme whenever I have the option to do so. lol.

This is awesome. What a way to fuel creativity just before the game's release. I'm curious to see how you'll do a possible visor when it comes time for that.

I used Nite Shades taillight tint on a piece of plexiglass. It turned out kind of blurry, so I think I didn't put the first coats on light enough. It's not so bad that I can't see out of it though.

Hopefully soon I'll get some good pics of me wearing it!

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Turned out great!
Another option to use for a great visor, is a #5 darkness welding visor. It's what us Mandalorian Mercs use

That looks really good. Seeing this makes me want to make one too. Are you eventually going to add a spike or an attachment of some kind?

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

wow, great job on the helmet! Looks fantastic :)

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

This is the post that has turned me into a cosplayer. I love the helmet and the model looks great!
As far as sizing goes, I stopped the pepakura right under the chin and it makes a level line around the back using the first pieces under the ears. It still is a little tight around my ears, and I'm worried that after hardening it might not be large enough. I'm already trying to think about ways to cut the helmet into two parts, it has a very well defined line that this can be done on.
This brings me to my questions:
1) Because I'm worried about interior roominess, fiberglass is probably a better option than rondo. BUT this helmet has several areas that look about impossible to get fiberglass properly into (Anything around the visor, the band on the back and the extensions on the jaw line.) I know that a small coat of rondo and then fiberglass is a popular method, but is it possible to do only rondo in certain areas and fiberglass the rest, making sure that the fiberglass overlaps the rondo'd areas a little bit?
2) If I have to cut it in half, is there a good tutorial for using magnets that i can use? Ive been searching for a while and can find nothing that is really helpful (besides iron man builds with the slideable mask piece...) I'm not sure if i should prep for magnets before or after bondo or how many magnets would be required to keep this together.
2.5) I really am unclear on when the best time to cut these things is (I think since I didn't finish the bottom of the helmet, I'll definitely not cut anything until after I've hardened the thing since it isn't very stable as it is now.) Is it best to cut after the fiberglassing and bondo each piece separately, or would it be better to bondo and get it basically finished and then cut through?
3) Painting. It seems almost every pepakura build is finished off with spray paint, but spray paint has one of the most limited color pallets of anything out there. Can i use custom mixed interior paints through a paint sprayer in the same way? Will using mustard for weathering work with this type of paint? I really want to go with the color scheme from my favorite soccer team, Seattle Sounders, and it has a very unique green.

Thank you very much for creating and sharing this, it is truly awesome. I apologize to everyone for posting a novel here, but noobs gonna noob i guess :)

Scottinho said:

1)The difference between fiberglass and rondo is more about the process, not the thickness. Either way you'll want the same amount of build-up to give proper reinforcement. If you're dead-set on going as thin as possible, then yes, fiberglass cloth/mat is the better option because the pieces will bond to each other more reliably than a straight rondo approach. And never underestimate the usefulness of a small wooden dowel or even a toothpick for pushing fiberglass into small, hard to reach areas.

2) For the cut, first off I'd suggest using the existing "break" (as seen in the last picture, starting from the edge of the "hood" and sloping down and back towards the underside of the "ear") as the cutting line, although I'm not sure what the best approach would be for the faceplate, whether it would be better to include it in the lower "half," the upper, or to cut it completely free and essentially have a three piece helmet assembly. I'm not aware of any other tutorials on using magnets, but that's mainly because I've never looked. I would imagine 2 or 3 on each side (if you use the cut I suggested) should be plenty to hold it in place. I would venture to say a good approach, if you can, would be to form a "peg and hole" line along the edges to help line up the separate pieces as well as help lock them in place so they don't slide.
2.5)I would say the best time to cut would be after reinforcing the inside and smoothing the outside, but before the paint and primer stages. You want to get as much of the "rough handling" done while it's still one solid piece (the bondo/sanding/smoothing stage). Most likely you will have to slap a bit more bondo and do a little more sanding to get the pieces to sit flush against each other (no matter how clean the cut, you'll still loses material equal to or greater than the width of the cutting tool) but the bulk of the bondo work should be done while it's still in one piece.
3) Some paint shops (typically automotive related) can custom order/mix paint for use in a spray can, but it might cost a bit extra and you may have to wait for them to order it if they don't mix in-shop. If that's not an option at any of your local shops you can use a paint sprayer (or even brush it on) to the same effect, but unless your helmet is going to live a very sheltered life, I'd suggest using exterior paint, as interior paints generally aren't made to withstand wind, rain, or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight without peeling, cracking, or fading. The mustard method should still work, but I've always been partial to laying down painter's tape for masking. But I do understand the use of the mustard method for less uniform masking needs, i.e. "battle damage."

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Thanks for the response, Zaff. I didn't even think that custom spray paint was really a thing. Since you mentioned it, I found this website: http://www.myperfectcolor.com/Custom-Color-Spray-Paint/33865.htm. These seem pretty low cost, so I might go ahead and get them to see how they come out. I've done a few painting projects (the on canvas type) in my past and discovered that I am not well suited to using brushes, so spray paint would be my preferred method.
As far as the cut goes, I was considering making a two sections by cutting along the color divide in Remrafs pictures, basically separating the silver from the blue. The silver bit underneath the ear may be the only section that I leave with the blue side, but having it on the silver side would allow for each half to have a section that is above the other half, allowing the magnets to work with gravity.
I still think I will try to use the 'Rondo in impossible areas, Fiberglass for the rest' method for hardening. I'm really nervous about creating air bubbles or not having a section reinforced because some of the areas that are hard to reach I can't even see (the top of the hood over the visor comes to mind.)

I have to put my helmet process on hold until I can find a good spot to use toxic materials without giving my apartment complex brain damage, but if anyone is interested, I can update with the failure/success of the methods I am trying. For now, I'm trying to figure out how to turn a nerf nstrike elite retaliator into the New Monarchy's autorifle Vanquisher VIII. This is another area I'm having trouble finding tutorials in since I'm not modding a nerf for performance, but instead destroying it to become a prop. Good thing I started this project early, I might need all the time I have to be ready for next year's DragonCon.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Dude....wow.... Nice job and thanks for sharing! You've just added one more thing to my list, which my wife may or may not kill me for.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

It is a very good pep, and thanks for sharing.

I do have a request, if you want and are in a mood for it , can you do the enforcer helmet from Halo 4, you don't need to passe it to pepakura i can do that, if it is not to much to ask

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been very active in this thread. My computer started to flake out on me right in the middle of my next project so I've been waiting for my new one to get here. Before I get to that though, Here's a couple of shots my fiance's dad took of me wearing my helmet in his studio:

And now, to show you what else I had been working on: the Manifold Seeker helmet!

For those that don't know, this is one of the PlayStation exclusive helmets (until fall of 2015, anyway). I have an Xbox but I loved this helmet and decided to model it anyway. I've yet to decide if I want to build it. Anyway, enjoy!

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

What blender tutorials did you watch? I am trying to get into that but don't know where to start.

I mostly used tutorials from cgcookie.com/blender/. I watched a few of their basic intro videos, and then a video series they have about modeling a Porsche. That series was extremely useful as modeling the car body was very similar to modeling the helmet. It goes through a lot of stuff like reference images, mirroring, etc. Then if I had other questions I mostly just googled around to see what I could find.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

All right, new stuff! I have been using some of the resources recently released to work on some of the Destiny files. I know some others are working a lot of helmets but I already have my helmet done so I though I would move on to another part of the build not touched before, the boots! I chose the Iron Banner Regalia boots:

15663731223_fc2fbe8fd7.jpg

DOWNLOAD: http://www.4shared.com/file/2ZRaGj7ice/iron_regalia_boots_by_Remraf.html

This is fairly simple as it is based off of the Bungie/DestinyDB model viewers so there isn't a ton of detail. On the bright side, that makes this very suitable for a foam build. Just ignore/move off the "edge" pieces. I also left most of the parts separate because I know people do a lot of different things for boots so you will still have those options.

This looks great! I really like the Iron Regalia warlock armor! I'm going to build the boots you linked and try to make a full Iron Regalia warlock cosplay! The only problem is I can't find any 3d downloadable models for the armor like the gauntlets or the hood. Should I just make a 3d model? I've never done digital models before, but I really want to do this cosplay :/

Througha long winded process I eventually ended up here :)

Hi folks, my name is Rick and I am from the UK (Scotland) and as we have our first ever locl comic con this year, I am looking to do some proper cosplay.

Destiny came to mind and after seeing the very good Gary Sterly blog (http://garysterley.tumblr.com/) I felt compeled to find out how to create my own version.

I saw Remraf's helmet design as a great basis for my idea and am now learning Pepakura (Slightly scared :) )

Hopefully it will all work out and I wont get shot from spilling resin on my GF's carpet!!

Hope to be an active member here :)

Once again, nice to meet you all.
