Discord Refresh

Appreciate the clarification, Noble. Rainbow Zone and game night roles sound like really good additions to the server, so I'm looking forward to those. Still a bit iffy on the voice system, but I'll take your word for it and wait to see how it turns out in reality. Would still appreciate your thoughts on #vent-zone, but other than that I'm good with everything that's been proposed.
The answer your thoughts on Vent Zone I am going to keep this one brief at it is a non negotiable of these changes, one of very few.

Due to the nature of the channel in the past introducing scenarios that pose significant liability for those involved, it will not be returning. I am floating the idea in the interim of creating a channel in our header that makes easy to locate resources for people available should they benefit from them. This will take time and must ultimately be approved to be done and is a concept right now. Would that be of interest though to the wider community?

Hey there, thanks for working hard for us.

While it is a bittersweet feeling to see some of these channels go, I would like to ask about the #life channel and its removal.

I understand it is not the most popular channel, but I think it could be an important one to keep. I know someone recently told me, "Aw, I'm sad that #life is being deleted. I wanted to post a photo of myself in a graduation gown!" We have also had people come in the channel asking a homework question that they are stuck on, giving an update on buying a car or house, getting a promotion at their job, or that they got some medical lab tests back and would love positive support. I understand this is a costume group, but don't we all have lives that we would like to share from time to time? I do agree that if we keep the channel, rules need to be added. I would be happy to discuss and brainstorm about this channel if anyone from the staff would like to.

Just like your opinion, mine is not final and can be swayed.

This seems like something that should’ve been addressed in the original post. Currently it looks like the removal of the vent zone was something y’all were hoping we wouldn’t notice. Which is silly when it’s one of the channels with higher traffic. Is there any other thing that’s non-negotiable in this upcoming change?

Many channels that had similar focuses have been combined as of this time, as a goal was to reduce any present redundancy in channels and help focus more engagement in a smaller subset of channels. Vent Zone is the only non-negotiable that comes to immediate attention.

Your perspective of its lack of address is valid and was not the intention. I for one, was fully aware there would be conversation like we are having now, about it going. But as I mentioned prior there is not a whole lot I can talk about regarding that particular channel going due to the overall sensitive nature and topics that channel introduced which are the reason for it going.

Ultimately, I mentioned earlier a possible remedy to making resources available directly in the server regarding multiple topics (Mental Health, Therapy, etc.). While it is still a concept I welcome any input on that idea to still provide some type of avenue to support to topics that channel had introduced.

Well that’s disappointing, but at this point I’m no longer surprised by this being a common theme for staff.

I think this is a very compelling argument and reason for this channel to stay. Its important to share milestones in a community you thrive in, or find a space to bring a little bit of real life levity to the space. I agree that we would need to think of some "parameters" to make sure topics stay appropriate for the area as we will be creating a "Moderator FAQ" where we know what we can have mods rule on and what can be passed on. I'd be more than happy to open a forum thread to discuss those parameters amongst the wider community so we are doing everything we can to keep our community safe. Our staff will have the first pass of those parameters for all Moderator topics before it went to general audience that way we have information to present.

Would these be links to organisations, or online articles, or something else? If the former, then we'd need some for each global region, or even each regiment.

I think to start, the easiest jumping point would be links to organizations and online articles! Our main demographics we would make sure we are covering right now are the US/Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Australia. We would have to consult with regionals of these spaces for best recommendations of organizations but; that would be my take on it. Though, if there are other options; I am open to hearing them!

Question about some of the channels being removed will they be archived (we can see them just not chat in them) or permanently deleted?

We keep old channels archived, but they will not be visible.

My only question is are there any limitation who can create threads? I know they can definitly be used to fill the void of some lost channels but I am curious how that process works. Sorry I am not entirely familiar with security settings when it comes to discord moderation.
Maybe thats what the ticket system could be used for? not sure how that works either lol.
I know it can be a hard decision because the thread list can stack up quick in the channel depending.

IDK man, the VentZone was the craziest channel on the server. I would hop in every once in a while to expect to find folks who were bummed because their cosplay wasn't working out and try to offer encouragement. But increasingly often I would be met with folks venting some very serious problems that require professionals, and most certainly things that do not belong on a halo cosplay discord server. It would put members of the community in an awkward position where they can't practically help but now feel obligated to help due to the severity of the issue. The 405th is for making halo cosplay, and that's it. So I don't think removing a cannel that discussed something so far from the purpose of the community as the VentZone needs an explanation at all.

Threads can be recreated by request by Division level staff. We will utilize the ticket system for requesting their creation and create a template to make sure as they are requested and a thought out reasoning for them is provided, as a big thing is if we add anything we want it to be added with value for the community in mind first.

Bold of you to assume I want vent zone to stay. My issue lies with it not being mentioned up front of the reason for its removal, but rather it comes off as if this was an attempt to slip past us. The previous reasons for channels to be removed was, multiple channels that could be consolidated and channels with minimum traffic. Removing a channel with high traffic with no explanation until asked about comes off as extremely shady.

It's already been communicated that there was no intention of trying to hide vent-zone going away. There was a lot of information to share, and things are bound to get missed. It was already pointed out that there was a mistake in not including a meme channel to replace the consolidation of 2 meme sharing channels. There were other channels that were inadvertently left off the initial list and caught before the larger community post.

Something that didn't get mentioned at all in the announcement is the addition of opt in taggable roles for groups like fitness crew and crafting nights so that the mass walls of pings can finally go away.

Maybe I'm guilty of doing the same here, but this reads like someone trying to read malicious intent over what are simple oversights.

I knew we forgot to add something else. Yes, there will now be reaction roles to remove the walls of tags. These will be open to future additions, we will be starting with Fitness Crew and Crafting Nights out the gate. There are plans to add a Game Night version as well.

{...} making resources available directly in the server regarding multiple topics (Mental Health, Therapy, etc.).

I really think that a costume server is not the place people should be getting their mental healthy and therapy advice from. Does that open the organization to lawsuit should the person in distress harm themselves because they came to a social media outlet instead of a trained professional for help? What happens when they log on at 2am and nobody is manning that channel to take their call-will the group or more specifically the IP owner (Art) be held responsible for dereliction resulting in harm or death? It just seems like a huge burden and risk to take on for a costuming group.

I tend to agree. This is a costume server. Let's just stick to that, eh?

Nothing wrong with providing resources for those who need them. I think you may have misinterpreted that message.
