Hey Everyone! Hope you are all safe and sane. I decided to make a rifle from one of my favorite scifi films, District 9! Side note, apparently the script to the sequel is being made after all of these years o: *shrieks* I'm super excited!

Humble beginnings! The structure of the weapon will be a 1/2” pvc pipe sandwiched between layers of eva foam. I’ve spent a couple of hours re-watching the film and trying to find online references. No 3D models here, just old fashioned photo references. I made a simple blueprint to help speed things along too. It’s not perfect but it’s enough to get me started

WIP
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the design of this piece, it’s not the most straightforward design and so it is quite challenging! For now I’m just adding more onions I mean layers!

Wooooo, watching this, are you going to make the arm that can shoot it?
I’ve thought about it! Maybe in the future if I ever go to a convention (I still have never been to one!) I’ll make the arm for it. For now, I actually like the idea of being able to say “Sadly I can’t use this weapon because I don’t have the alien dna” . For now, I’m just focusing on the rifle.

Looking forward to it man!

WIP Again
This build continues to make me make on the fly changes and decisions. I usually save detail work for last but in this case I need to add the details before I permanently attach the layers together. Here I’m doing the classic “Recess.”
To do this, cut out your shapes from the foam, in this case small ovals. Once free, press the shapes passed flush, this will create recessed plans!

Wip Again Again

The main bulk of the rifle is done! There’s still more to be made but I wanted to get some detail work done. Here I also implemented my diy hole tool. Think of it as like a cookie cutter.
Basically, the idea is to find a pipe and sharpen the opening to punch out circles. Stay creative and affordable! I used a small copper coupler for this one. The blue handle is just a small pex pipe (tiny pvc)

WIP Again (3x)
I have to work out little details here and there so for now here’s a size comparison between the alien rifle and the human BR! Hope you’re all doing well, what are you working on?

Aside from some miscellaneous details, the rifle body is done! The tricky parts were the heavily angled sides near the front as well as the multiple layers near the handgrip. Next time we’ll have a party with a bunch of cans and recycling!

WIP Details
Some progress on some miscellaneous details and the canisters! The canisters are made of just foam with recycled plastic bottles to give it a sturdy yet lightweight cylindrical shape to work with

Building Phase: Complete
With the completion of the 24 angled tubes, I finished the build portion!! Why yes, those are (aftermarket) Nerf Mega Darts. I used foam dowels, half moons, and 3/8” pex pipes to make a structure to connect them to the weapon. This took me a few weeks to mentally process but I think my solution is fine :) the idea is to make a ball and socket joint but in foam

Priming Phase:
Good news, the foam darts have accepted Plastidip! Haha it’s not perfect but I can get away with it. The prop is primarily white so I used white Plastidip too. I still prefer to prime pieces with either black or grey but I figured this could be better? Next we paint the whites, blacks, and oranges. We’re nearing the end!

Completion: The Debut
The weather has been pretty dreadful but with some photography magic I present one final photo! I’ll make one last post showing different shots but I hope you’ve all enjoyed my progress :)
