to me smoothcast seams harder cause you have to sand away all the paper in order for it to finish or add on spot putty and bondo which would then be just as effective as fiberglass only more expensive and happy late B-Day

You don't need to sand away all the paper, as long as you spray primer over the paper, it will be fine. Even if you don't spray primer, the worst that will happen will be slight discolorations between what is paper and what is not. Just saying. ;)

put a good few coats of resin on there though, otherwise it will warp, i agtually fg'd the outside of my helm, and it worked out pretty well, but i had to be really precise with it and it allowed me to keep the support struts in place to keep the shape, and stop it warping

UPDATES!

Check out first page
Nice work
You done a better job than I did for my first time fibre glassing, It went everywhere! :p
Good too see it kept its shape and didn't warp too.
Keep us updated on what's coming next.

Its better and has more progress than mine. I don't see any mistakes at all. Good job. I used cardstock paper that I buy for 70 cents a piece to make my pep helmet. I hope that doesn't warp when I resin it. I use no support as well.

Haha thanks Reece!
I was kinda shocked at how it came out to be honest.. I was sorta expecting it to turn into a ball of schmootz ready for the bin!

I did get it everywhere though...including the inside of the bike gloves when I put them on!

I'll talk later :]

Thanks! I nearly didn't put the struts in..it was kind of a toss up between putting them in or being lazy and leaving them . Glad I did! :]

Although, it has taken me half a year to get this far! Thats what happens when you only work on it once a month!
Good luck with the helmet! I'm sure it will be ok ;]

The outside was resined first, then I took the struts out and fibreglassed.
I'm thinking the next time we have nice weather, I'll bondo.

Yeah, If The weathers the same here I'll probably resin my helmet and mask next time we have good weather :]

I have to agree the fiberglass matt is really hard to work with, just watch out for air pockets with it when sanding. This is looking great cant wait to see it finished

Keep it up :)

*jumps on the bandwagon late*
Heyyy nice looking helmet, im actually using your pictures as an idea what mine should look like at that stage :) keep up the fun work 8D

What's strange is Bondo still dries pretty quickly.. I'm not sure on an ETA since I usually do something else and almost totally forget about it, lol. Also not sure if it is "softer" or not like if you were to poke an x-acto knife in it and it goes through easily. Pretty much if you get Resin/Glassing over with you'll have a smooth ride the rest of the way. Bondo's straight forward but, your arm will sure to get tired so get some 90-grit or possibly lower. I think it's spot putty that really is effected by weather. Anyways, good luck and hope of this helps.

It's definately a pain to work with. Fibreglass tissue FTW!
I do have one relatively small air pocket on the inside of the helmet, but it won't affect it much 'cause its in the sticky-out bit at the back :]

Thanks so much for the advice! I have copied and pasted it into word so I don't lose it!
I'm looking forward to bondo'ing, it seems like the real development of the model happens at that point! :]

Saw the updates on Page 01, and it's lookin' my-tee smexy there, Beth. Good job so far.

Don't worry about the amount of time it's taken you to get to this point. Look at me; I started my Mk VI helmet back in 2007, and it's still not done, lol. You're well ahead of me in terms of progress, so you can take solace in that ;)

BOLD # 1: I typically call the "sticky-out bit at the back" part a "curved band", lol.

BOLD # 2: Unless you're going with another construction altogether, like in my case (sheet styrene), which takes forever to do. My advice? Stick with the good ol' resin/fiberglass/bondo approach. You'll be done sooner, lol.

Hehe Curved-band-ness! That makes more sense than my version I think! :]

Ima defo stick to the bondo method, espesh as my family are experienced in using the stuff, so I have some good support right there!

Hopefully it will be done in the next few months, but we'll see how everything goes :]

Very cool progress thread. I'm sure I'll be referencing this once I finally get started.

Do you plan on fiberglassing the outside as well?
