Aiming to compete all bondo this weekend.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the side visor or nose pieces?

Cut the visor and mounted two pieces inside using three post screws.

So to take a break from bondo, I worked on a Visor idea.

I used two safety shields, and trimmed to fit inside. Cutout a double visor section and tinted to full unit (piece behind detailed visor.

Tried heating them but would not form a new shape. Will fit is carefully for install.

With one final touch at the end, the setup for a visor will be under $20 (plus crap loads of extra tint.

Hexagon Pattern In Progess

I'm sure this trick is not new but after I tinted the visor I debated creating a pattern to highlight the HUD on the inside. But not having colour in my printer - I did a test Hex pattern in B&W instead.

This was a piece of acetate printed on. Made a radial gradient in illustrator over some outlined strokes.

Here is the visor with the acetate in front. However I will place mine behind as it will integrate better...

Getting pumped to finish my bondo now...

You sir are a genius! Why I haven't thought of the visor hex is beyond me... but I hope that it becomes of more use to others as well! It could also be helpful in marking cut lines for those making ODST visors...

Thank you good Sir!

Cut lines is a great use as well.

Quick update, finally did my first primer coat. A bit more glazing putty and I should be done.

I cannot believe how much I have learned from trial and error so far. My next build will be so much smoother.

Pre-painting stage

After hours of learning how to balance bondo and sanding, I am nearing the finishline (Hopefully).

Using 220 grit sandpaper, I'm smoothing out excess primer and a few glazing spots.

The visor is prepped and waiting, lights need to be decided on and paint choices narrowed down.

Thanks again to all on the forums for posts here at 405th.

Let me back track quickly...

Random Tutorial (sorry if it has already been posted elsewhere)

tumblr_m7c6fdDrLZ1r3ezeko1_500.jpg

1. Tint a clear plastic visor with 5%-20% shade car window tint. I do not recommend using this strategy if you have a nice mirror helmet visor already. It works best with a transparent tint.

2. Download and print 1 PDF file to use for the Hex detail on your visor. Print on clear acetate. Use a high quality printer to prevent acetate from warping or getting streaks from the rollers.

3. Position the printed acetate on visor and tape in place discreetly. Would recommend on the top edges of the visor where no one will see the tape.

The patterns are zipped together in PDF format. Enjoy.

Tip: With a tinted visor, you will get a really nice integrated hex pattern behind the visor. Position on front for a more obvious look.

Question:

Is this amount of scratch normal on a bondo detailed helmet?

I think I need to switch to a 320 sandpaper instead of 220...

Any suggestions are appreciated.

It's normal if you don't use higher grit sandpaper. The amount of prep work is directly related to the end smoothness, you can get surfaces as smooth as glass with enough prep work.

So while I am contemplating my final colour scheme for this helmet (MP team orange inspired or gun metal grey), I did some prep on my side lights.

I am not aiming on any hardcore lighting, just the effect/illusion based off two detailed holes per side with mini flashlights peaking through.

I found some steel "1/4 countersunk style finishing washers" for $0.17 a piece, I roughed them up with 60 grit sandpaper for priming and due to a recess behind the washer - had room to place tinted plastic to complete the look.

Have not painted then yet but using spare material and these washers, off to a good start.

1. Dry fit, held in place with the existing primer paint
2. 3 items needed - washer, tint (in this case 5% and piece of plastic
3. Demo showing light shine through

Side light caps got primed today and did a fresh coat of grey on the helmet as well.

Most frustrating thing in the world is finding the glazing putty was not flush when sanded. Touch ups have been on and off all week.

Bought Paint - going with multiplayer orange and grabbed a satin protective clear coat.

Rust oleum has a new line of metallic (silver, red, blue and purple) based on what I've seen at the local Home
Depot this morning.

They also have colour changing Metallics that run $30 for one can.

Maybe for my next build....

Anyone try this color changing paint yet???

Update time...

- primary paint and detail paint complete
- debating leaving the orange as a top stripe and adding metallic blue as the primary.
- visor in, hex pattern placed

Last piece will be the side vents.

Question 405th...?

How do you prevent 'fogging' inside the helmet?

Scenario: I dry fit using egg carton style foam. I'm guessing to get a firm/snug fit - there is not much circulation for air.

tumblr_m82057bl5Q1r3ezeko1_1280.jpg

To clean up the bottom edges, I'm also hoping to use some material or soft tubing to prevent scratches.
