i started the pep today and resined, slushed, and started the bondo work on the H3 Recon helmet today. thinking i will start with the basic shape and do something special with it to make it unique so this build might take a while (like the warrior helmet did lol) i have a workshop built now so it should be easier to work on my pepakura projects from now on.

i saw this on another thread and thought that it is just awesome looking and i want it, and if i want it i have to build it. also working on gaining infantry status on here too ;)

i took sir tsabocs suggestion and method for the inside of the helmet, instead of rondo i used smooth on liquid plastic, no fiberglass at all. Firm and strong, light weight. Really nice method to use if you have the option to. i did three layers of resin on the outside and did it in sections to prevent warpage (top, middle, bottom.... repeat) I did start the first layer of bondo and sanded it down to try and define some shape but than i stopped do to being tired and taking care of the kiddos. let me know what you all think. I am hoping this one will come out well. Any comments/suggestions/ constructive criticism is always welcome.

This is amazing! can't wait to see how it turns out :)
Thanks bagel! I also can't wait lol

Looking good! Good luck with the rest of your build!
much appreciated inheritor!

This is looking awesome! Seems like you work pretty fast! Keep up the good work!
yeah i got the day off work and needed something to do while the kids were in school lol, so a new project was born. Thanks for the compliment drewhinkle!

looking very neat. wish i could have a workshop for my stuff. I used to have one in my garage. However i just moved into an apartment and lost my garage. lol keep up the good work

Looking good, it'll be amazing if you can replicate the look of that helmet and I have every confidence you can :)

Looking good! I need to get some Smooth On products. I think that when I tackle another helmet I will use some more of the contemporary methods like plastic coating the inside instead of glassing. Looking forward to seeing more!

Before i built the workshop i was doing everything outside in the weather on a table than said screw it and built a small shop, a 10x10 shed with a power cord ran for lights lol.

thanks Sara! I am gonna try to get it as close as possible! gonna take a bit with that detail though.

Ghost using poly plastic for the inside is pretty amazing! quick and easy, a bit messier if you aren't careful. just make sure all the tiny pinholes are sealed shut lol, i forgot and had some leaks through the helmet. nothing a little sanding didn't take care of!

well guys off to work i go for the next ten hours. i will have my phone on me, pretty sad i sit on 405th.com more than facebook. Nah, not really, I don't like social media lol.

Sonny! Good to see you at work again, I do like your Warrior. Keep going man! maybe... add digi camo!

Lol I love that 3d redner it's what I'm basing my helm off of. Not 100% but some nice detail from here and there. Good luck ur bondo looks very clean and smooth

oh man slammers, i didn't know you had this render. sorry man, don't wanna take the spotlight. i just looked at your wip, yours is coming along so nicely. i found this render through google on deviant art. thanks for the compliment.

viper,it feels good to work on a new project, keeping my eyes fresh lol. the warrior is still waiting for a good mold job from me so i can cast it.

sorry for the double post but progress is going on in my neck of the woods.

so i pretty much started the basic shaping and smoothing tonight and threw in the elbow grease and did some sanding over the entire helmet. pretty much just did a rough cut into it, have to add a little more bondo to some spots and smooth them (mainly the cheek area) just to get the final basic shape, after that i get to start the final shaping and high detail. will be adding a lighting set up.

Whoa there tiger, I don't mind sharing i found it on google as well so just cuz I found it doesn't mean somebody else can't take a crack at it plus u seem to be way more experienced at this then me :) please I insist keep going with the render. I'm only using parts of the render for mine

Thanks for the compliment as well, I'm a huge noob at this stuff so from my experience in attempting many different art medians, I've learned that ur first attempt is never your greatest. So I'll keep practicing and one day be a pro.

Can't wait to see more, good luck :)

how weird is it that we both found the same renders lol. thank you slammers, i couldn't find any other good ones that i liked lol. that saves me from having to change my plan of attack on this thing. no updates will be had this weekend since i am doing a big side job, tis the season also means a low bank account. i will update more as it comes along.

I know what you mean I spent weeks trying to find any halo 3 pics of recon helm...no luck whatsoever lol so I resorted to that render. Might I add it is a beautiful idea I'm surrpised it's actualy not in game cuz it looks worthy to be

so the helmet is coming along.... slowly. I spent most of the time tonight just outlining the detail and measuring, erasing , measuring, re outline, etc. so i just started the first bit of detail going in and finished the basic shape.

so thats it for now, not much of an update like I wanted but the figuring out of detail is time consuming lol.

boo double post, yay update!
So i had an unexpected day off from work due to my car pool forgetting about me (new guy mistake) and went to town on the back detail but first thing is first, my kid wanted me to post the picture of him sporting the helmet in progress

next is the first patch of detail

next level of detail

to make the detail i am using stickied back foam cut into 1/8 inch strips and making a wall/form than filling that area with bondo and when it gets to that next stage where it is tacky but not set i pull the foam form and than clean it up (sand, fill, fine work it) it is taking forever to pull the detail due to having to make the first step than moving onto the next and having to measure, draw, erase, measure, draw, stick foam. and yes thats pretty much the process lol. trying to make this as syymetrical as possible because if its not than i won't like it.

So now its time to do a little sanding and add more detail
