Hey 405th, as I have a suit that is 1 thigh strap away from completion, I decided that I needed a weapon to go with it. I consider my Spartan alter-ego to be a heavy weapons and vehicle specialist, and to that I end I wanted to re-create my favorite weapon from Halo: the Halo 4 Saw which incidentally, I have yet to see any of around the 405th. This is also my first ever weapon build, and is from scratch so any and all info, tips, and advice that you guys can give, please don't hesitate to do so!I am going with the sliced cardboard method, as my mother works for a folding carton company( imagine little debbie snack boxes, pizza boxes, and everything in between) and I have to unload an 18 wheeler twice a week at McDonalds so my access to cardboard is literally limitless. So anyways, on to the good stuff:

So, thats what I got so far. The gun barrel is still subject to change, and its a little rough, but from the first pic to the last was only about 3.5 hours worth of work. I have big plans for it especially once I get to paint as it will not be sporting a regular gun metal paint job.

All thoughts, opinions, advice and criticism is welcome. Thanks for looking!

P.S. if anyone knows of a SAW or saw build that is around could you point me in that direction?

YES I've always been waiting for a SAW being made, you've got my support on this!

You'll be the first one to make a saw...and going scratch build style is daring

Also one thing to note about your plans, make sure you get the white parts of the saw look like plastic. It might be made of metal but one of it's cool looking features is it's matte finish... Unless you're doing a custom build

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip BiGHARYSCOTSMiN. I actually was going to do a custom paint job, but after seeing the various rises and falls of the cardboard after the detail pieces are set in, Im not sure if it will work the way I wanted, and I probably wont know until I can see it in primer. So in the all likely event I have to recant my previous statement and paint it based on how it looks in-game, what you said helps keep me focused! Here's a small update for today, I filled in all of the major gaps in the cardboard with spackling, and gave the gun a coat of resin. Tomorrow Ill, try and do some sanding and detail cutting.

huh I thought I was the only one that built a saw? yeah I can't post pic's do to a busted lens in my camera. and best buys is trying to fix it, i'll show you mine once I get a pic so you can see one that's done.

Looks awesome so far keep up the good work! Will you be making a mold of this or just using it as is?

Thanks for the support! Im not too sure if I'll mold it or not. I've never actually molded anything before. I like the quality and smoothness molds and casts make, but its an unexplored realm for me, and Im not sure how a trying to mold this thing would go, its kinda huge. Im a 6'2 individual and when this thing sits on the ground the barrel tickles my chin lol.

Dude you may have made my day! If you can get a pic of your SAW somehow, I'd love to see a finished product I can compare mine to. Thanks for the input guys!

Loving it sofar, any tips for a noob when it comes to the poster board layering stage?

Lol, as Im a noob myself it may be sort of like the blind leading the blind here, but as far as your board laying goes, its pretty straightforward. Trace the shape of the gun on to one piece of board, cut it out, then lay that design back onto another piece of board trace and repeat. I used 8 layers of board for the general shape of the gun. Then I cut out individual pieces of board for detail. In my case this was all from scratch, no templates, and done by eye, so there isn't any specific pattern I can point you, although I think I've seen a DMR pattern somewhere on the forum awhile ago for made for a sliced build. Hope this helps!

And here's a quick update; the SAW is starting to come together. The base layer of paint has been put down and I made a custom touch to the drum mag, a personal preference that hopefully wont piss off the purists.

huh now it looks like a halo 2 turret. in fact this might be the one that will be in halo 2A, due to it looks like it, which is what I've done, one day while I was playing I was like huh why can't the chief use this like the one's in halo 3 but be able to reload it, it had a ammo box on the side I can't see why not. oh and best buy said they'll have it but in three weeks.

Yeah, I guess it kinda does look like an H2 turret when I looked at it again. Well, with the paint job its starting to sport, I don't think there's another weapon in halo that remotely looks like it lol. Well, if any purists were got rattled by the 5.56 belt, then this is definitely gonna raise some eyebrows. Well here ya go:

OK first person to guess where I copied most of this from get a cookie! No matter how much I played with the camera quality and graphics the pics dont do it much justice, it looks better in person. Once I finish this side Im thinking of doing a space scene with the Infinity on the reverse side. Let me know what you guys think!
As always critiques, advice, and criticism is appreciated!
Thanks for looking -KingAir

Really cool build, i definitely want to build a SAW at some point, after I finish my first suit; it looks like you've found a pretty good method for doing it. As for the custom skin my guess for the inspiration was gonna be 405th facebook page.

Well S323, you get the cookie! I've been busy picking up more hours at work lately trying to make as much $$ as I can before school starts and a few local paintball scenarios. As a result I really haven't been up to much with the SAW, not that there is too much left that I wanted to do. But as promised here is the reverse side painted with my attempt at a space fight between the Infinity and accompanied UNSC vessels against the Storm Faction Covenant.

There's still a little bondo work that needs to be done, pistol grip covers for well...the grip, and some mag adjustment as I looked at the in game models and realized it has a slight tilt, and a little more detail to add to the paint scenes. As for my next project...I was going down a list of either a rocket launcher, flame thrower, or machine gun turret. What would you guys like to see? But whatever one I choose, it's gonna be on the low and slow. Once the fall term starts school tends to take up any the majority of my time, priorities and whatnot. As always thanks for the input!

well lets see I built a rocket launcher, started a flamerthrower(super easy.) as for the turret(which one halo reach, halo 2(which I this is the SAW) or the halo 3 one?) i'd said best of luck.

Well if it were the rocket launcher, I actually have an ancient but still very much working Nerf Rocket launcher that resembles the jackhammer rocket launcher that I could modify into a working rocket launcher prop. If it were the flamethrower I'd actually like to try and make a working flame thrower( Im a special kind of crazy) but that obviously wouldn't be for Con use. If it were to be a turret if would be from Reach/ H3 as the two are very similar and I have an idea for mechanisms to turn the barrels and cycle an ammo belt through the gun (majoring in Mechanical Engineering gives one an analytical mind) go big or go home!

:confused wait a second didn't you just build a cardboard SAW, and now you want to go to the five mile high club with your builds, making them work. I don't mean to be mean but if you were going to make a working flamethrower. which I doubt anyone has made, and the reach turret I have two of them. PITA they where but now I've got them doneish need's paint and a lot of it. plus if you want you could do what I plan on doing if I had the time, which is just epic, a guass hog gun, more parts then I care on building. and yeah I also have a halo 3 turret but it's part of a hog build.
