"The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Microsoft is producing a Halo anime series titled Halo Legends, which will be comprised of seven short films.

Not a lot of details about the story for the films have been revealed, but there were a few teases. Shinji Aramaki, a creative director working with Microsoft on the project, is creating his own short that will detail the history of the Spartan warrior class.

Another short from Studio4 C titled "Origins" is a two-part film, each 30 minutes long, which "tells the entire 100,000 year history of the Halo universe."

The films distribution is being handled by Warner Bros. and will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and through digital distribution in early 2010. Xbox Live fans can catch a preview on the anime this fall."

a 2 part anime totaling 1 hour long that tells the entire 100,000 year history of the Halo universe?! Hells yes!

Even though I really really despise most anime... DO WANT!

They better not f*** it up though, but the concept art so far looks beautiful.

EDIT: Your subheading says inbound early 1010, just so you know :p

they better not screw this up

i've seen so many sci-fi type stuff get screwed up when someone tried to turn it anime.

I thought it will probably be something like the Animatrix, which was pretty good, hell some of the shorts were better than the Matrix Reloaded movie.

true. i just hope things turn out ok. halo is a big project and a risky project to take on, because you have to be meticulous about detail in this series or fans will try reachin down the directors throats XD

i know i would XD

I remain as wary as I did when I first heard about Halo:Reach, if not more so, becuase the Press Release continually mentions Microsoft working with the company, not specifically Bungie. And even I have lost a little faith in Bungie to maintain their own continuity, especially with Reach. Why do you go to all the trouble to approve and release the Halo novels, to build up all this backstory in them, especially if you only intend to ret-con it or ignore it down the road for the opportunity to sell another project.

Already the comics HellJumper and the forthcoming Spartan: Black, show a lack of continuity for the previously established universe, with Hell Jumper ignoring and glossing over the Halo 2 ODST designs, and the art work for Spartan Black showing the Spartans as wearing the Halo 3 version of Mark VI armor, even though the comic is reported to take place before Halo 1.

I just am uncomfortable with the thought of Halo becoming a complete cash cow to be milked for all its worth, when in the beginning Bungie was so protective of their Intellectual Property, and only released tie-in merchandise and expanded universe material that met with the highest levels of quality and fit with the established Halo universe.

Like the Star Wars Prequels you mean? I'd have to agree it is a worry but at the same time none of us can say we didn't expect it to happen. You've got a choice, either role with it or abore it but either way it is going to happen/has happened.

But yes I'd hope they stick to canon, the novels were great and showed how spin-offs could be done. But I have some measure of hope that these Anime will be good, Production I.G.and Studio4 C are masters at their work so it should be in good hands.

That sounds about right Adam.. Kind of a Animatrix for Halo. I'm sure that different studios working on different short films will mean that each piece will be unique and have it's own style. The awesomeness of this cannot be described.

Halo.Bungie.Org is reporting more news related to this:

Microsoft is producing seven short films titled "Halo Legends" in the anime style. Five production houses in Japan are handling the physical animation, but Microsoft's creative staff is approving major visual and storytelling decisions, O'Connor said.

The first trailer for Legends will air tonight on GTTV on Spike, at 12:30am.

The official press release:

A preview of select "Halo Legends" episodes will first debut on Xbox LIVE, the largest gaming and entertainment network in the world, starting this fall through a new experience called Halo Waypoint. Launching in fall, Halo Waypoint will be a new destination for "Halo" fans on Xbox LIVE around the world. It will inform fans of the latest "Halo" news and activities, and grant access to content ranging from podcasts, trailers and screenshots, to exclusive video footage you won't find anywhere else. It also will provide a new challenge for "Halo" gamers with a career system and player rankings tied to both in-game and out-of-game accomplishments related to "Halo." In addition to the limited, early episode premieres, Halo Waypoint will debut several behind-the-scenes videos that chronicle the making of "Halo Legends."

This isn't just a anime series, it's the launch of something much, much bigger. Microsoft seems to be testing the waters for pushing the 'entertainment network' aspect of the 360, and to do this the 360 is getting it's own Halo channel!

Looks good and all the little details are interesting (different art styles, halo channel, so on so forth). That initial image looks quite nice, and I'm definitely looking forward to the trailer tonight.

And now I'll feel less silly invading anime conventions in halo gear. =P

lol if you look closely at those ships the are actually driven by spartans.

Now thats what I call a real crotch rocket lol

From Gametrailers:

“Halo Legends,” which will officially debut at a panel presentation today at Comic-Con International in San Diego, is being produced by Microsoft’s 343 Industries and features creative direction from anime pioneer Shinji Aramaki, director of the critically acclaimed “Appleseed” and “Appleseed EX Machina” anime features, and Mamoru Oshii, director of the landmark “Ghost in the Shell” movies, with additional production from Joseph Chou of J-Spec Pictures. "

Appleseed and Ghost in teh Shell are top quality anime. MS have chosen their artists very well.

I believe the picture in the first post will be from the makers of Appleseed, it has the same 'Cel-shaded style'.

I don't usually watch anime till i'm REALLY bored and there's nothing to watch on t.v., but I can tel you guys that ghost in the shell is a good show. I especially love how those spider things look both cortoon and 3d at the same time. Maybe we'll see some scarabs like that....which would be epic!!

I especially would like to see what the Covenant would look like!!

Looks like my wishes have come true here :D But hopefully it keeps that "rated M" factor, I don't want Halo to become some sort of kids show..
