405th,

I would just like to know what everyone's general helmet sizes are? I cant seem to really pinpoint mine and I am on my 5th helmet (second design) and its either been too small or too big, so I just want to know what everyones general helmet sizes are in mm's. Thanks!

Mine are usually 300mm in height (depending on the helmet, that is), but that's really not going to help you out. In fact, no one's helmet size is going to help you out.

What helmet are you trying to build? How tall is your own head (from the bottom of your chin straight up to the top of your head)?

I am trying to build the Halo 1 Mark V helmet by Rundown. My first 4 helmets were the Mark V by MOZ

My head is about 9.5 - 10 in tall. The reason I ask for for everyones general size is because my helmets seem to not even be close in size. I tried scaling based on my reference picture and then I calculated everything down to millimeters. But I just seem to be missing the mark. Here is a pic of my build right now.

Also for reference this helmet is 12 in tall in the pic. I dont know if it is too big or not, but it sure is looking too big and I am getting super frustrated wasting paper and time building helmets lol.

It's best not to base your helmet sizing on whether it looks too big or not, but rather on whether it will fit you.

Measure your head as accurately as you can and then use the point-to-point measuring tool in Pepakura's 2D window to compare points on the 3D model.

Just make sure that you compare the shortest, narrowest and shallowest points on the inside of the 3D model to the measurements of your head (plus padding, rondo, fibreglass, etc.) and you should be good to go.

Your picture isn't showing up for me I'm afraid.

My apologies on the pic, here ill try posting it again. I put the helmet on and it cant get my ears in without stretching the helmet, but then when it is on its VERY ROOMY and looks very disproportionate.

Here is a link to the file of the helmet I am going to try to do for my 6th attempt .... http://www.4shared.com/get/MGLvbiQP/MJOLNIR_MkVI__MKVI_HD_HELM_DF4.html

From my basic measurements it seems like this helmet should fit as is, but i noticed that its measurements were kind weird. i dont think this helmet is as wide as it says it is. The depth and height need to be bigger for me but if that is the true width then it needs to be smaller. So, yeah I am confused and extremely frustrated.

H:264mm
W:340mm
D:231mm

Inside measurement's are important. Outside ones, not so much. The width of a helmet in Pepakura is based on its widest protrusions, not on what will touch your ears.

I wouldn't judge scale by the size of the neck hole either as it is scaled for the neck, not your ears.

When the helmet is fibreglassed you can re-cut the neck hole or cut and hinge the back of the helmet to enable you to get it on.

As long as you have space inside the helmet for your ears plus padding (etc.) then you're winning. Ear to ear plus 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch each side should be good.

There is no way to know how the helmet will look in proportion to the suit until you get everything made, but it's worth remembering that you do not have the same proportions as the Master Chief and will not look the same in your armour as he does in his.

The helmet is looking good by the way.

Thanks, but I think I am going to start on my 6th, I really think it is too big. Let's cross our fingers that this one will be the right size. And thank you so much for your help. Your advice was great and I am hoping your advice will help my overall build!

I always think my helmets look gigantic when I'm building them. When I get them on my head with the rest of my armor, it looks better.

What I've done with my helmets is I'd do a height measurement of my head, then factor in that there'll be at least .8 cm extra up and down since I use EVA foam for my builds, then add an extra 1 - 2 cm for padding. I then take that height measurement, enter it into the pep designer and let it scale the other dimensions accordingly.

From there it takes a bit of imagination to see if it'll fit correctly based off the new measurements.

Takes a lot of guess work, but it seems to work alright for me.

Helmet sizing will always be an annoying thing. I work in the motorcycle industry, and I do have to say sizing is pretty important. That being said, I have seen helmets here between 250 and 300 mm, so snywhere between that should be good

Given the choice, I would go with slightly larger. You can always add padding or have some wiggle room.

But that is just my philosophy, I've gotten shockingly lucky with a majority of the helmets/masks/armor I have found.

Yeah I will go a little large with it, but I think from looks of it and from putting it on it is actually larger than an actual motorcycle helmet. I bought a liner to put on the inside for padding but that still wont nearly make up the difference. I am not going to scrap this helmet, but I think I will put it on the back burner and move on with the build then come back to the helmet as my last piece to finish pep'ing.
