Alright so!
Brand new to Pep, also to prop making.
I know this forum is typically Halo, Halo and more Halo with a sprinkle of Ironman, but I'm going to try and make as many Skyrim props as I can. Why? So I can practice for my Ironman set!
Starting with the helmet (typically), I just made my first ever 3D object from card. Leaving the horn on one side so I can later fill it with fiberglass, I'm currently starting the body of the helmet.

First thoughts of Pep? This is great fun, takes longer than I expected, and can really be quite tricky!!
Stay tuned for more updates.

Half way there! Work slowed me down drastically this week end, but hopefully I can get this built tonight!
Looks bigger than I thought it would, but I have to remind myself it's an Iron helmet!

Hopefully this is what it'll look like in the long run:

Aww man... this project just got put on indefinite hold. After fully contructing the helmet I've come to realize that the scale seems way off. It's probably about 120-130% of the size it's supposed to be so that really put a drop on things.
I'm thinking next I'll try an IronMan helm instead, but I don't want a repeat of this. Any ideas how to 'test' the scale?

Read the stickys, watch cereal killers videos, and in the pepakura program right click on 2d side of page select mearsure distance of two point then click on the points of the 3d model for measurements.

I read the sticky about sizing, and I kept hearing the numbers "28 high" over and over. I'd say I have an average head so I went with that. The helmet is 26-28 high or so, but it looks huge. Like enormously huge. I can't imagine how big it will be once it's Bondo'd. I understand that glassing the inside will help widen it to make it a tighter fit, but still I don't think it'll be enough.
If I put the helmet on, and put the back of my head to the back of the helmet , my eyes come about 5cm away from the eye holes. Seems an awfully long distance, and far too much gap space.
I'm probably gonna continue this helmet just for fun because it's my first ever pep but I'm convinced its too big :/

Allow me to explain where you went wrong. When we talk about scaling helmets, we're usually referring to the height, as it's easier to measure from our chin to our head. For an average guy, 28cm is perfect for a HALO helmet. However Halo helmets start below the wearers chin, and go over the top of the head (Full Face). The helmet you're building is not from Halo, nor is it a full face helmet. These forums are for creating Halo costumes, so our scaling tutorials are also made for Halo costumes, not Skyrim unfortunately.

In short: You used a measurement for a Halo helmet, not a Skyrim helmet. The helmet you're making starts at the nose and goes to the top of the head, rather than covering the entire head, so you have to scale appropriately.

Normally everything would have worked out fine, but as the helmet is made to cover half your face, and you scaled it to cover a full face, it got scaled up to 28cm from top to bottom, which is HUGE for a half-face helmet.

The build is back on! This time I've scaled it and I believe it's perfect. I got it to this stage, tried it on and it fits like a charm. Just enough room for some padding and of course the glass. Should be on my way here soon with the rest of it. Keep you all posted.

Alright so the completed pep file doesn't look a whole lot like the reference picture in the first post, but the reference pic is much closer to the actual 'Dovahkiin' style. I'm gonna be pretty heavily modding it now that I've got it pepped (pic coming soon) to try and get the right look for it. This is the hopeful outlook:
I'm thinking using some small, round buttons for the 'studs' in the detail, and perhaps strips of folded card to make the very square ridges that outline each piece. Any suggestions on what is best to use for detailing this? I was thinking of just going ahear with the bondo and forming that to match the shape but it seems like a LOT of work!

As promised! Resin starts tomorrow, I've decided to go with fiberglass cloth I think.

So the helmet detail has been added in cardboard for now, just something for the bondo to build onto. It'll be finely detailed in the sanding/ shaping process, and I'll be adding the circular rivets there too.
So resin should start tomorrow, I've put some cardboard struts inside to help retain the shape I want, so wish me luck!
Also, is the resin commonly bought and used the 'Bondo' brand fiberglass resin? I bought a different one from Hobby Lobby, but it's still a 2 part epoxy resin so I'm sure it'll be fine, just a tiny quantity for a high price though!

Hey thanks!!
Just hit it with the first coat of resin, letting it cure overnight. Damn those fumes are pungent. Even after it's done and it's sitting and curing it's stinking up the garage! Need to get some ventilation going.
Most definitely not only smelly but dangers after prolonged exposure. Make sure u use a respirator when u use that stuff, 15 buck for a mask ain't worth dying for.

something like this will do the job well: http://www.bunnings.com.au/protector-respirator-kit_p5822368
and some safety goggles to go with it.

or go all out: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Medium-O...motive_Tools&hash=item1e748c8f01#ht_239wt_932

this may be a hobby designed for fun, but no matter where/what you're doing, safety first!

Yeah tell me about it. I do have safety goggles and what not, but I decided to skip the mask. I figured 'ah it won't be so bad, then I'll get one for my next project'.
WOW was I wrong. As soon as I poured the resin I knew it was way too strong for that kind of thinking. I completed the first coat in steps, 20 seconds of brushing, then walking away for a minute to breathe. Not a good idea!! I'll definitely be getting a mask before I even attempt the second coat and the glassing on the inside.
Question though, is bondo as toxic as the resin?
Once I was done with the first coat I put the helmet into the garage to cure. It stunk up the whole garage and the smell was coming into the house. I decided to leave it outside for the evening then moved it into a spare room for the night with the window cracked. This morning it barely has a smell to it, and I think the fumes become less potent as it cures, so I may use a touch more thickener next time.

not to sound mean or anything, but your first mistake was continuing with the resining when you knew how bad the fumes were :p there would have been safety instructions on the side of the tin, always read the instuctions first lol here in Oz, when you go to bunnings for the kits for example, alot of stuff is locked up for safety reasons. if you get a small tin of resin, you have to get the staff to get the hardener seperate. same with the spray paints, all locked up. like i said, safety first :)
with the bondo, although it uses a resin hardener (i think i said that right), its nowhere near as toxic as the fibreglass resin. however it can cause irritation to the skin. normal latex gloves are fine during the application of bondo. wear your eye goggles as the sanding stage etc, can get very dusty. for the same reason, those disposable face masks will be fine to protect your breathing. but you will have a decent respirator from the resin anyway :)
hope ive been of some help :D happy building Jay!

Looks good man. You've got a good build so far. Try not to get too get discouraged with the scaling issues, it happens to the best of us. I made the same mistake with the exact same file that you did. Its a dampener definitely, but when you re-do it will look great. Keep up the good work, the Pep so far looks better for scaling, and as far as the reference picture, youll notice that the helmet he is wearing is about half as long on the face. Once its hardened, you can just dremel it to look the same.

Yeah thanks for the tip tabris :] I've worked in construction for a while, and generally am a fairly safe person around chemicals and what not. I just thought I'd wing it for a quick coat. Not gonna happen again rest assured ;)

Haha yeah I had no clue about scaling at that point. And yeah I think I'll cut the face down a bit... maybe... I dunno. Now I've added the ridge to it it actually looks pretty cool. I think once the primer is on it'll show up much better and I'll be able to see if I need to cut it or not. Thanks for the encouragement ;) I'll get on it ASAP, just gotta go out and buy that pesky respirator cause in order to wear a badass helmet you generally have to be alive!

Safety first! Just finished glassing the helmet, damn that stuff is messy. Had strings of fiberglass cloth stuck to my gloves throughout the whole process. Annoying!! Hopefully it's easy to clear away once it's cured :]
