Re: mkV build. 5 weeks till deadline !!!! <metal basecoat on>

I love the Mk V! I always enjoy reading Mk V threads, takes me back to when my brother bought Combat Evolved for me. Anyway, it's why I'm more partial to the Reach permutations than the Mk 6 and GEN2 stuff.

Re: mkV build. 5 weeks till deadline !!!! <metal basecoat on>

Nice Mk V. Could consider some motorcycle/dirtbike armor underneath to mount the Mjolnir components onto if you're having problems filling it out.

Thanks, I've got plans to make my own underarmour from EVA and lycra ( the other day I also considered the usefulness of Corduroy) the panels or segments of the underarmour I figured I would either cover in a 'quilting' of ycra to get shaping or just carve detail in and seal the foam with heat and PVA. The knees in particular I have to focus on cause they look like marshmallows on sticks.
But the main thing is to get it done to an acceptable wearable level before the 11th of April. I can tweak the detail stuff later for the next one.

Depending on available time I would like to at least fit the helmet lights for this con though, the vents on the backpack and more detailed weathering can wait, I am going to see how happy I am with just a black/brown wash into the corners etc for now as it will be the quickest to put on. Also doing it with water based acrylic on top of the Automotive paint so I can clean it off and start again if I'm not happy.

You will like the photos of us at the con when we get there then, the missus is nearing completion of her Reach mkV variant armour in foam, we have put her helmet off though as we can't finish the armour and the helmet in time.

I just got back inside from painting the brim of the helmet and the back of it in black. I don't think I'm going to be happy with the finish this paint has given, but I will check it in the morning when there's actually light.

Re: mkV build. 2 weeks till deadline !!!! <weathering and fitting>

I began doing some panel lining and rubbing excess off (waterbased acrylic over the car paint rubs off if I'm not satisfied). Then i tried rubbing the black paint off once dried with steel wool. Hitting up the sharp corners to make the undercoat show through and the occasional wear through on flats. This is part of one shoe, they are getting the most weathering by the way

Re: mkV build. 2 weeks till deadline !!!! <weathering and fitting>

I bought my tactical belt, and a motorcycle helmet head case today. Along with some webbing (25mm/1") and heavy duty press studs. Hopefully that's the last of the large outlay for this costume. Well, before I make the full under armour that is.

Very happy that the Oggio case fits the large helmet

Re: Jobe's mkV build. 1 week till deadline !!!! <weathered, still fitting>

(Managed to have my post double up, ignore this)

Re: mkV build. 2 weeks till deadline !!!! <weathering and fitting>

Wow what a busy weekend this has been. We are down to the the wire with these outfits. OCC is next weekend and the Easter break has been a godsend (no pun intended). We are at the dark late end of day 3 of straight armouring.

Friday was spent working on B1ondeange1's reach armour. Got it sanded and then painted PVA on it till 3am. Saturday I painted it all in the same silver mine was done in, then blue metallic in the evening. Today we committed to her helmet. And between us have got it neeeeeaaaarly ready to paint tomorrow.

On top of that I found time to finish lightly weathering my armour (still couldn't bring myself to do the torso or helmet, will do it later when I'm not rushed to finish it. And less afraid to ruin it) painted the insides of all the pieces black, and just Dremel-ed out the vent holes at the front of the helmet where the fans sit.

As much as I want to post pictures of the paintwork I don't want to steal b1ondeange1's thunder too much :p

Here's a picture of my completed shin instead

Finally ready for this weekend's con. Better(any) underarmour will follow at a later date, this will suffice for the weekend

Re: Jobe's mkV build. 1 week till deadline !!!! <weathered, still fitting>

Well good news, we got over the line with both outfits, I just spent 2 days in mine, and it survived almost completely intact. I made a couple of tweaks from day one to day two, I made a makeshift 'holster' with some webbing and a press stud just so I would have somewhere to hang the pistol while I needed my hands free. After day 1 I had some sore swollen lumps on the tops of each shoulder where the chest sat, so for Day 2 I made a shoulder-neck pad to go under my undershirt and that made a world of difference (should have padded the torso to begin with).

I now have a few minor repairs to make by next weekend for a small event we are going to at a store with other costumers. I got a foot stepped on which gave me a little crack in one boot, and I will have to go over all of my strapping joins etc to make sure they are still secure.

We got an awesome picture at the 'Empire' stall in front of their backdrop, talked to Abby Darkstar and Keith Zen (awesome guys! I can't stress enough how nice they were), hung around with a local costuming organisation and photobombed the 501st Legion. Also saw many other great costumes, the quality locally is definitely on the rise. Also a lot of Halo, I think we saw about 4 different people in rubies' (hard to tell each apart to count them) 2 ODST's (impressive work guys if you are here) and another local group RHD armoury with their awesome spartans and mass effect outfits, not to mention their stunning 'Rescue' pepper pots

I wish I had pictures of it all to post but I just didn't the fingers or free hands to operate the phone or camera for the whole weekend. I did manage to get on the OZ Comic Con facebook page in costume with Jedi Shayla Jaste

side projects:

Pistol (credit for my motivation has to go to blondeangel, she did the ground work with finding the file and sizing it up for hers, which in turn made me want to make one) I'll have to find out the creator/uploaded of the file for their credit as I can't remember

Here's the latest thighlight on the mk5! (sorry)

Back to painting tonight, will get the silver undercoat on, then tomorrow go green

and a little progress on the pistols
20150621_193125.jpg

as you can see, I have rushed mine a little too much, happy with the resin coating, where it soaks into the foam it firms the EVA right up, where its a shell its nice and flexible until you put sharp pressure on it, then it cracks. Time willing, there would have been more coats of resin and sanding to get a full smooth hard surface, this will have to do. The one on the right is being treated with more care, a lot more time was spent on the assembly and sculpting, so we are doing very light resin coats to preserve the detail.
