I picked up one of Adam's Marine Helmets from DogWizard last week and got it on Friday. Looking to take a break from Thesis rewrites and drafts, I decided to work on the helmet this weekend.
I received the helmet in a rough trimmed state:

That only actually required a minimal amount of sanding to get the helmet in good shape. I haven't worked on the interior yet, don't have access to my dremel while I am at school, and I was content to leave a few surface imperfections becuase, like all my costumes,I like to go for that weathered, lived in universe look, like this Marine had been through more than more scrap.
After several passes of primer, sanding, and more primer, I was satisfied with the surface and put down my base colors of Krlyon Indoor/Outdoor Flat Black and Satin Italian Olive.
I then gave it a first pass with a couple of acrylic paint washes, black and several shades of brown. I really like the acrylic paint method, it is what was sued a lot in the original star wars props, R2 especially, and it involves several different methods of applying the paint directly to the surface and wiping it away with a wet paper towel. You can also apply the paint to the wet paper towel and wipe it across the surface, dab the paint on and then wipe it off. The key for me was to always wipe down, that way it would simulate rain washing the dirt and grime down off the helmet, say as you were on patrol in the jungles out side Voi.
After that, I went back and applied some personal touches. Inspired by the troops in Vietnam and the Colonial Marines from Aliens (an acknowledged heavy influence on the marines in Halo) I deiced to add some slight graffiti to my armor.
The first was my long standing nick name stenciled onto the brow of the helmet:
Then I put some Spades on the sides of the helmet, as a nod to Easy Company from WWII:
And finally, inspired by one of the Troopers from the clone wars cartoon,some kill marks:

I like the personal touch - graffiti wouldn't work well on a Spartan but it's perfect for a Marine build. Looks great!
