Hey everybody,

It's time to go forward with submitting the request for a Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana battalion. We have 6 deployed members with more on the way and have discussed it all in this thread.

A name has to be decided before the request is submitted. Here are the names we have so far. I'll open a poll up in this thread once we discuss the names and find the most popular.

Lakeside, Lakeshore, Great Lakes, Gravemind, Rustbelt, Reach, and Osanalan

Keep in mind that our emblem will be heavily influenced by the name we choose. Our emblem is made for us from what I have been told.

I'm a fan of Great Lakes and Gravemind battalion.

I am also one for Lakeside Battalion.

Gravemind is just too strongly tied to one direct thing in my eyes. I totally get the reason for it though!

I do like the sound of Lakeside. The only con I can think of is that it isn't really Halo related. It doesn't have to be though.

Sole did put out the name Osanalan battalion. It's the fake key mentioned in a Cleveland battle during Halo 3 in a comic. That isn't very inclusive to other states though.

I'm having a tough time deciding what to vote for

Great Lakes is a very good choice. A name based on the specific geographic location makes it easy for people not in the Battalion or Regiment to easily know and understand the location of the Battalion, and all 3 proposed states touch and interact with the Great Lakes and they feature in each states history.

Lakeside is another good choice as it still describes the general geographic location and relates to all 3 states, but is a little less specific.

Reach Battalion ties into Harvest Battalion and has continuity with an existing Battalion in the Regiment, but does not help new people or non-members easily understand the location of the Battalion.

I do not support Gravemind. Existing Regiment and Battalion names are either based on geographic descriptors, specific or general, or are in some way related to the UNSC. A name based on The Flood is contrary to the established naming conventions and design language for the 405th. The fact that it is also based on a Discord-centric meme or inside joke would be extremely exclusionary to people not in on this joke, especially new people, and flies in the face of picking a name that can stand for all members past and future.

I'd say the Great Lakes Battalion should be off the table. The area the Battalion would cover does not encompass all of the great lakes or all of the states that touch/surround them. Lakeside does make sense but not great lakes.

Lakeside is generic and does not A. Spark a sense of pride; B. Is plain and generic, which Cadet pointed out, "Great Lakes" is much easier identified, which is good for not only general recruitment, but also gives a geographic identity that most can figure out where it is.

Michigan alone touches 4/5 Great Lakes and frankly gives an iconic look with Michigan's mitten shaped lower peninsula. When looking at a map, you see Michigan and then Indiana and Ohio. Lakeside is generic, bland and does not lend itself to a sense of unique identity. If anything, Lakeside should be off the table because EVERY state has lakes, and thusly "lakesides" and does nothing to say where the Battalion is located.

I'm on team great lakes sense MN and WI are already in a battalion and PN and NY are in a different regiment.

My biggest issue with great lakes is it's lack of call back to halo.

I'm all for Great Lakes. Sure, it's not Halo related in the slightest. But like others have said, it's very easy to figure out where we are from with the name alone. Like Col Fork said, you can look at a map of the US and immediately see the Great Lakes and Michigan's lower peninsula and see the other two states are neighboring territories.

It doesn't necessarily have to be Halo related. It would be cool if we can find a Halo name that is very close to 'Great Lakes' to some degree, but everyone who would be applying for a membership etc already knows they are going to be a part of the Halo universe. I follow the Star Wars costuming groups a bit, and the 501st even has theirs named 'Great Lakes Garrison' because it works. Though, I think theirs is for just Michigan, you still get the idea.

Unless there was some major event or battle in Halo lore that tied this area to an in-universe event (i.e New Mombasa in Kenya, etc), most people would not know where we are located unless it was a well known piece of lore.
