Hello! I have officially postponed my Mark VI armor to work on a suit of ODST armor. I am recreating "The Rookie"'s suit of armor, using the pepakura and fiberglass method. So far, I've completed 1 knee, started on a shin thingy and a shoulder piece, and have started just now on another shin. So far the pepping for the shin has been faster than that of any other pepakura project I've done, probably due to the fact that I have switched my music, and have recently started using the "normal" method (cutting out all the pieces on a page before scoring and gluing). Here are some pics:

The "normal" method results.

I'm hoping to finish by tomorrow, but that may not happen, due to the fact that it's already 9:00 PM, and I've only got an hour or two to work. I'll have more pics up by tomorrow.

That looks terrible...NOT!! (((Borat joke. I know like 2 years old)))

Good start! Everything look clean in your folds. Nice a even!

Keep it up!

I'm doing Romeo :D . Looks like Dutch and Dare are happening too. Whoever made the Dutch decals just needs to add a few stripes to their armor, and the Dare helmet creator should just go without backpack or sholders.). Anyone want to do Buck and Mickey? (Mickey has a flashlight on his helmet and some minor paint details, Buck I believe also has some kind of attachment on his helmet and some minor color details and a Jolly Roger on his chestplate.)

EDIT: Yeah, it's dutch with the Jolly Roger. I went back and studied Bungie's gallery, and it would appear he looks something like Rookie with an antenna on his helmet. And the bayonet is attached to his left backpack strap with the handle pointing down, right? How is Bungie going to pull off Reach? Spartans don't put decals on their armor...

In the end, I'd like to put together a nice Buck. But right now I'm just trying to cobble something half-decent together in time for ODST's release, and since I already started on a WETA helmet...I'll figure out the rest as I go. ^^;

Besides not having the backpack, he's got the little antenna on his helmet and a bayonet on hist chest piece. No jolly roger, that's on Dutch I think.

Anyways, goo luck on your ODST!

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments! Unfortunately, I suck at scaling, and the shin thingy is probably too wide. Here are some pics: (btw, I'm going to finish the shin anyways.)

Here's the foot, which happens to be too small :p

I'm guessing you're asking how they're going to differentiate the spartans. From the advertisement, you can see their silhouettes, so I'm guessing they're probably going to be different sizes, with different specialties (e.g, sniper, explosives, speed, etc...) It would be super awesome if they had armor permutations and stuff, but that's doubtful.

I don't think we're going to be looking at Kelly, Fred, or Linda here. Though it's easy to relate the silhouettes to characters we know and love, as we've seen with ODST I would expect a whole new cast of characters. And besides, Eric Nylund's novels tell us that the only people who can differentiate the spartans are those such as Dr. Halsey and they themselves, as they all appear identical in their armor. Though I see what you mean...Kelly would be uber fast, Linda would seem to have her sniper on burst fire...if they're in there. Though the explosives specialist would be someone other than Sam...alas, he died during the spartans' first contact with the covenant.

Anyway, this thread has been hijacked and I apologise. We will no longer talk about characters or the fiction of Halo.

Hello again. I've been working on my ODST shin for a while now (almost finished, I'd estimate it at about 85%) and today I'm doing my first coat of resin on my ODST knee. Also, my dad went out and bought me some fiberglass cloth, which I'll be using on the shin once I'm done pepping it. I don't have any pics right now, but I'll post some later.

EDIT: I resined the knee, and it's looking great. A tinybit of warpage on the right side, but other than that I'm very impressed as to how smooth the resin is. Just a small question though, am I supposed to sand or anything in between coats? In conclusion, tomorrow I'm moving on to actually fiberglassing if the weather allows for it. New pics will be up tomorrow if I do.

Let me know how that cloth works out. I'm using mat right now on my helmet and I'm doing far more cleanup than actual work. Getting resin on your fingers is inevitable, and it's a freaking pain. I have 12 different pairs of gloves on hand (pun-tastic!) in three different materials: some for applying resin, some for actual glassing, and some for handling fresh mat without it sticking to me.

Unfortunately I have already bought 27 sq. ft. of the mat...

I played around with both cloth and mat, and I've had easier success with mat. I find the stiffness makes it a little easier to manage. Just make sure to cut it in to well fitted pieces. Both the mat and cloth have loose little fibers flying over everywhere under certain conditions. I'm going to save the cloth for stuffing in to corners and whatnot.

I'm using the "dip in resin and place by hand" method for applying my fiberglass though, so I'm not sure if cloth will be easier if using a different technique.

Bobbio, you should wait intil you fiberglass your pieces until you sand them. ;) That way you won't sand though the resin as paper and make holes.

Hello, once again. I finished pepping the back part of the ODST lower leg, and I just fiberglassed the knee. It has a couple of air bubbles already, and due to the shape, most of the resin went into the center. I made a vid to post, and I'll post it once it's done uploading to youtube.

Someone (sorry can't remember who it was) suggested using polyfilla for the detailing portion of the armor, which is more readily available to me, due to lower prices and less toxicity, so I'm going to be using that. Does anyone got any tips?

UPDATE: Hello, I finally have an update for y'all. I finally pepped another piece.

The center chest piece. I finally took the time to just sit down and pep a complete piece in one sitting. (Having a project that's 2 pages long helps) I didn't scale it, (much like every other piece of armor I've made :p) but I've figured out what I'm going to do. I've decided to scale the left and right pieces to fit snugly with the center piece, rather than figuring out the correct proportions :p

The chest making wil commence once again tomorrow
