So I was talking with a friend today and she mentions something called a gold daft punk helmet. I google it and i find this:

daft1.jpg

seems like the faceplate could be a viable way to easily get a good EVA face plate..

It's not quite exact, but almost good enough (It doesn't extend to the sides far enough). Now we just need it in different colors...

i was actually just contemplating ripping the visor off and doing the orange/gold tint. as for it not reaching all the way to where it should, it'd be simple enough to just extend the non visor part of the helm out and just give it gold reflective paint to blend it with the actual visor.

it prolly would be BUT that one was a vacuformed visor and i dont no if hes seling them

i know omsone posted the link to wear he has em and shows how he made em

hah yeah.. i found that.. this company wants 64,000 to make a replica of this helmet... what a joke.. there were so many unnecessary things in their detailed step by step process i nearly lul'd myself to death.

i thought that it was decided making the face plate isnt the hard part... tinting it is.

even if he was selling these why would you waste the money on it only to rip it apart? wouldnt be worth it.

thats prolly exactly why

he prolly doesnt want his stuff replicated so he put it at a high price :p me i know i can prolly take my time and get a very good set of armour, i know mine isnt the best and has some nicks in it but, i like them there, its a surefire that it wont get molded if sold :p yes it will get sold at a lower price IF i decide to sell it but im fine with that if im knowing its not going to get replicated into molds and casts

and yes dread tinting it was the hardest part but this came already tinted

so i was reading around that site and saw some of "amazing" helmets already made and this picture made me think of something, although i'm not sure if anyone has tried this.
ieql2o.jpg

who ever said that that the EVA visor had to be entirely see through? could you not just mold an existing visor into the top of the helm, making it a smooth visor look, yet only being able to see out the actually lens part. i mean if the guy on the right's lens and top of the helmet were the gold tint, you would barely even be able to tell. just my two cents on the issue.

this is true. but i think you'd run into problems making it flush and seamless.

and yeah dread i'm not actually attempting an EVA anytime soon. i just thought i'd throw it up for those who might try it.

someone had mentioned re-tinting the visor... anyways, this has been discussed hundreds of times, i think i read like 5 threads saying the same thing posted right when i joined. then with further search i found another 20 from the past 6 months.

someone either needs to make it happen, or put it to rest... poop or get off the pot.

That pic with the 2 "Amazing" helmets... The black/gold one just looks like a black motorcycle helmet with gold acrylic paint on the bottom jawline. Are those supposed to be examples of his "Amazing" helmets?

that's exactly what it is. And no, those are replicas for people who know that the crap he put in it isn't necessary.

tell me about it. 64,000 for what any one of us could do for 10% of that price.

either way, i guess my theory got filled with a buncha holes. no real reason to continue this thread..

OK, seeing as I am a Daft Punk nut, I will clear a LOT of things up...

1. The picture in the first post is of Guy-Manuel De Homem Christo, one half of the MUSICAL GROUP Daft Punk. He is wearing his actual helmet. Either that, or it is one of the two actors who portrayed the group in their film, "ELECTROMA", wherein they mass produced the helms for the extras to wear (the story was about robots becoming human-like, thus no human faces anywhere)...

2. The picture of the crappy motorcycle helmet one is from a Halloween competition a year ago for some online zine; two girls won the contest, even though their helmets were not that superb.

3. The site you linked? Yeah, they made the Helmets for Daft Punk back in 1999 for their second album, "Discovery". These, however, were not "performance" helmets. They were "promotional helmets". They had TONS of LEDs and Electronics involved inside of them, which allowed them to do fantastic things. The site you linked originally would sell them for $14,000 -- however, interest gained and they raised the price. That is one reason they're $64,000. Another reason is to deter most people from trying to buy the helmets, as Daft Punk (the musical group) retains rights to the likenesses. Because duh, it's them.

4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyBHb3gfr2Q
Video of the "Discovery" helmets in Action. Worth $14,000, as the company that made these (that you linked to) made all the electronics to do this -by hand-. And yes, they do now charge $64,000.

Look for a post by CRTSHCTR on September 09 2008. He Vac-formed some visors for his Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo helmet.

And that's all for now.

Here's an actual good possible source for this... Security Camera Domes. I think I remember someone using a 12" (inch) tinted security dome for their Daft Punk Helmet. You could get it in clear, and goldtint it somehow.

Web Archive Backup of LED Effects' website, the guys who designed the Discovery-era helmets and electronics. I have no idea if their "datasheet" PDF which is linked there works anymore or not; I downloaded it successfully but I have no way to open PDFs on this computer I'm on at the moment.

EDIT::: Yes, the PDF still works when you download it from Archive.Org. Just got some software to check it. Mind you, it lists the steps used to create the electronic helmets for Daft Punk... This was done in 1999 though. Before Pepakura, before compact electronics, etc.

Parts 1 and 2 of an interview Daft Punk did in Japan around the release of the Discovery album, as well as their animated feature "Interstella 5555"... You can see the LED Effects Discovery Helmets in action much clearer here. You can also see the backpacks which housed the electronics which powered and drove the LEDs in the helmets, and the cables running from the helmets to the backpacks.

EDIT 2::: Fixed my first link in #11.

I molded the Guy-Man visor today. Came out very good I think and I may make an EVA helmet just to do it.

the visor was never the problem, its getting one like that with the gold tint to it is the hard part

I'm sure there is somewhere to get it coated, and I'm sure it's expensive. You gotta pay to play :cautious:
