Recon Build progress-First Build

Hey all!

Just wanted to show some progress on my Recon cosplay.

I've got the shins, boots, belt, and assault rifle left to post process, then its on to foam and rigging.

It's been amazing going from self doubt and not starting, to confident and doing it with the help of this community.

Going to push for Halloween completion. Really excited to meet you all at the cons!

Your build is looking gorgeous so far. I absolutely LOVE the use of Yellow as the primary color. I rarely see it in use, especially for Recon. I just wanted to ask you one question: was your intention to combine Halo 3 armor with Reach? I absolutely love the idea.

Keep us updated, and kind regards!

Thank you Kae!

Spot on! Halo 3 and reach were a huge inspiration and influence on my introduction into xbox and Halo. So this is my homage to the long nights with friends playing forge games on sandtrap, and my favorite helmet.

I just wanted to stay true to what I would pick in game vs in universe, and figured it would resonate with other people like it does to me.

I would usually go either yellow or white for my color, and decided on yellow and black. Nothing sneakier than bright yellow while on a recon mission! If I can figure out a way to get the Rune emblem on my armor, that would complete the nostalgia! If you have recommendations for UNSC stencils, stickers or printable ways to get some nice armor details like that I'm all ears.

Eventually I will itterate with resin visors, fans, lights etc. But for a first try I'm trying to keep it simple :D

This thread Decal Thread has quite a few of the misc UNSC decals. You can also find a lot on the Halo Archive discord server. Personally I printed mine on watersilde decal paper, but there are a ton of methods to making them. I know quite a few people do vinyl decals using a cricut or the like.

Thanks Drim!

I will go through that thread and check it out. I have a cricut collecting dust, so that might be a good use for it! Thanks for the info!

Quick update!

So I grabbed a couple images from that decal thread and made some stencils!
I threw them onto a quick paint file, threw it into hueforge to make it a thin 8 layer at .16 stl.
Was it optimal or efficient? NO! lol. It took 3 ish hours to print and is totally unnecessary, but now I have a stencil I can use for life haha!

I should have taped down the top a little tighter to avoid the blooming effect the wings have. Overall I dig it!
Honestly a little bit of bloom like that really makes it look properly military ya know? It gives it character

It is quite difficult to get a clean stencil unless you have a vinyl cutter anyway

Looks good!

Thanks N8te!

After looking at it some more, I definitely agree! What I thought were imperfections turned out to be little characteristics I like on each piece. Happy little accidents!

Also love your videos and stuff! You were a big inspiration in getting started with this. Thank you!

You're killing it on progress! At this rate you'll have 'er ready for Halloween.

I'm liking your light blackwashing with the yellow, it pairs well. Also that UNSC eagle paint effect looks sweet.

Good luck on the rigging!

Thanks Parzival!

That's the plan! I'll see what I can do in the next couple weeks, but should be alright.

I like it too! It's just some black Vallejo model paint with water, wiped off after a couple seconds. I've got some kiwi shoe black and isopropyl I want to try next, but figured I'd keep it all uniform for now.

I think the little touches like that add that extra something!

I've got a Magnum Pro hunting harness I'm going to use to help rig it all together. I saw in another thread that is what someone used.

What I'm worried about is the yellow being too bright for the Heros Time undersuit I have. I'm not sure if the undersuit is dark enough. If all else fails a black morph suit will do the trick!
