It plugs into the power jack in the back of the box, hence it is not necessary to open the Xbox and break the seal.

Whether or not you open up the Xbox is almost completely irrelevent to why it voids the warranty. It alters the heat that is contained in the Xbox, and also alters the heat generated, and thus further provokes the Red Rings, and, since it is external hardware, is YOUR responsibility.

Microsoft only gives a warranty to Xbox's that get the Red Rings because of a fault completely done by the system, and not by any external hardware or conditions.

Portal, there are near-infinite ways the Xbox can develop the Red Rings. Make sure everything is in shape, connected well, and if you can't find anything, then it is a hardware failure that can only be fixed by sending it in.
