@ Ronin: Indeed, sometimes people forget that this is a work in progress XP

@NZ-TK: Thank ya :D! I can't wait til I finish it too :D Then it's onto the Torso, and depending on whether another HD piece is available I may be doing someone's Scout or ODST helmet :D

@stiched: Thanks Skater, welcome to the 405th :D

@smilie: Oh, what peak warped?? The peak of the crown??

What peak warped?? The peak of the jaw or crown peak??

The crown peak....looks a litlle slanted...Might just be the pic got any other shots?
yeah on the back right of the crown when I hot glued it, I didn't pay attention and it slid a little bit... I didn't notice it ti after I seamed everything :( I may be able to offset it with some thicker applique of the thick Aqua Resin. I'm still happy with it :D

FIberglassed the inside, yes the helmet is ugly as hell and unsanded on the outside... I want to sand outside so I don't ruin my computer equipment or my lungs... I'm so tired... buttz..*thud*
I like the Chuck Taylors XD good job

What is your opinion of the AquaResin? Does it seem strong with the fiberglass reinforcement now?

I'm very curious, being as I have some pep helmets now to test it out on.

From my observations it seems a bit rougher that other resin applications, I can see that gritty texture you mentioned.

Actually that's the part I want to know in addition to what Sean is asking. How does this stuff sand? How is the bondo-like mix?

Questions questions, but mine can wait until you get around to that part. Looking good! For the warpage if you want to fix it, I would bust out the Dremel with a cutting wheel and some bracing and teach that pep who's Boss! You might be able to just brace it into shape if it has enough give in it as well then fix it in place with more resin...

Oh many questions! Here are some hopefully helpful answers:

@Sean: Well so far I'm really liking the stuff. I've made some mistakes, and I see where I didn't coat the helmet with the sealer well enough, mainly the lower back ridge of the helmet... I got a little green when it started to warp, but I managed to save it... ball point pens made some good make shift braces XP I'm confident some of the thicker A.R. will save it

The fiberglass is rock solid and it cures in about an hour, and the loose hairs don't turn into resin glass spikes of doom. It just takes a good amount of A.R. to coat the Fiberglass Veil. And since the chopped fiberglass makes me nervous, I didn't use it. This is where I can't compare it to other forms of resin since I have zero experience with it.

The only thing that annoys me with AR is some of the flecks that come off if you don't sand it, I hate it, I have to vaccuum after I handle my helmet, so that's the only annoying thing, a good sanding should fix it. If it was that bad no one would use it, this stuff is ALWAYS sold out XD

@Sigma: yeah there are some boo-boos I made here and there. I do see a dremel, and lots of sanding in my future. I'm gonna beat that pepakura like it owes me money. I'm having fun learning :D This stuff also seems to sand pretty well.

@ Frost: yeah I'm going to mix a nice thicker batch of this stuff and see how it does, granted I've never used Bondo, so I'm interested in seeing how it compares to it.

@Frost/Bradley/Sigma: I only did some light sanding to remove some of annoying little chunks. And I used a stripping piece of sandpaper. I have the finer grits for later smoothing. It sanded right off, no chunks came off as I sanded, they just sanded right down and it sanded smoothly. I did apply the seam coats and thin shell coat with a paint brush, so I'm not sure if they made the texture worse XP And there were some areas of hot glue under that. I may not get to the heavy sanding til next week, and possibly two weeks now since my production schedule is picking up again. I think when I apply to heavier mix I'll use a spatula :) Hopefully that will cut down on grooves.

Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions, I know my helmet isn't perfect, though I'm still enjoying the process :D

Go to the hardware store and get different sizes of dry wall spatulas, they work for bondo too, some small ones for detail and small areas, and larger ones for the main dome area.

Cant really fit a 3 or 4 inch spatula into the vent indents in the helmet.

Cool, there's a home depot right up the road from me. I'll try that out, thanks Frost :D

Doubles again, yes. "Whatcha gonna do when tey come for you?" :p

So here are some photos of the beginning of the smoothing process with a basic sanding. I have an assload of sanding, filling, dremeling and re-shaping to do still, so you can stop your fingers from typing "OMG U NEED TO SAND, SO UGH-LY!".

OMG U....make some excellent progress. The jaw looks straighter now, too.

Too bad Aqua Resin isn't available here in the Netherlands. I wonder what it'll cost me to import the stuff...
